Entrance to Underground Atlanta - MARTA end by Redlats Between the Five Corners MARTA bus/subway stop and the Coke museum is Underground Atlanta. There are a six blocks of stores and vendors (not just underground) -- typical tourist fare -- restaurants, souvenirs, shirts, etc. etc. -- just like the area near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Back before the Civil War, Atlanta thrived because of the railroads. To get away from the maze of tracks, Atlanta built viaducts over the tracks, and moved the city upstairs. The original center of the city was all but forgotten. Atlanta Underground was rebuilt in the late 1960's and there are a series of information plaques pointing out historic buildings and facades, etc. Leave a Comment

by amybrooke We mostly go for the free concerts. A local station 99X puts on concerts all the time. Get a Freeloaders Card and enjoy the good music. The bands are usually well known and the crowds are huge. There are lots of shops, Johnny Rockets, cool restaurants and bars all inside. The concerts take place outside. Leave a Comment

Underground Atlanta by seagoingJLW Located in the heart of the city, Underground Atlanta offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and activities. While there visit the APEX (African American Panoramic Experience) Museum. See the Good Old Days model train exhibit which has more than 200 reproductions of the city's most recognizable buildings. Since the late1960's, when the concept was first made to bring back tourism and people to downtown, the Underground has had a couple of bouts to revive and survive. It closed in 1980, and they city revived it in 1989, but riots trashed the area in 1992, and again nearly closed. Then another revival with Coke as tour anchor. They are gone, and so is the popularity. The migration of the Coke museum from this area, has again created a concern about decline and possible wrong elements hanging out down under. Not a good scene for the city. The latest while we were there in Feb 2009, was to have a proposed $400 million casino at the underground.

There was a lot of shopping here, and restaurants too! I wouldn't go alone because I hear it's not that safe sometimes. Leave a Comment

Unfortunately, I got to the Underground Atlanta a bit late and much of it was closed. There are nightclubs and bars, but I didn't visit them. Despite the appear of hip hop style African-American kids hanging around, I didn't feel too worried by their bluff. Police to frequent the area. This place is right at the Five Points MARTA Station. Nice assortment of shops and vendors. The Atlanta vistor's center is on the top level with helpful information about what to do while in Atlanta. There is a convienence store that sells Powerball tickets near the food court. Leave a Comment Directions: The center hub for the Marta trains. Just follow the signs to Undergound Atlanta.

by acemj Underground Atlanta is right in the middle of town and is a mall full of shops, restaurants and nightclubs. There are over a hundred shops and plenty of good restaurant and food court options. Leave a Comment
