everyone i have ever known, that visits atl have some unexplained need to visit the underground. ill save you a trip, there are some stores underground in atlanta, and theyre not very good stores at that!
Unique Suggestions:
if you like people watching, this is your place. you will see all kinds of people, unfortunately most of them will be asking you for some spare change!
Fun Alternatives:
for a good alternative, try one of atlantas 5 million or billion malls ( unfortunately, they are above ground!)
I visited the Atlanta Unserground in early 1996 - It was a great place. Lively, good food and a very entertaining World of Coca-Cola. I returned in August of 2007. What a disappointment. Coca-Cola had moved and the Underground is just plain dangerous. Stay Away. Nothing to eat that is very good, tacky t-shirt shops and and enough bums to scare away a NFL Linebacker. A great city has let a great resourse go down hill. It's a shame.
Unique Suggestions:
Only go during the day - and then in a group.
Fun Alternatives:
Go to the area of Centenial Park, the aquraum and the new World of Coca-Cola.
I mean since everyone mentions it as a place to go it is likely that u may just pass through there, but literally there is nothing going on there, some cheesy food joints... really cheap and nasty ones, some touristy T Shirts, a photo and sports shop. If they are meant to be promoting this place to tourists they seriously need to fix it up. In the 5 years that I have been in and out of Atlanta it has always been the same.
Unique Suggestions:
Dont stay too long... Well you wont be able to do anyway as there is Nothing to do!
Fun Alternatives:
I heard Little 5 points is a little more interesting, but to be honest I've never been there as it is not accesible by the MARTA train, you have to get on a bus from Inman Park.
In theory this sounds like a neat attraction. in the early 20th century, they essentially built a new downtown Atlanta on top of the old. These subterranean streets have been turned into a shopping center by developers. Sadly though, there is nothing particularly special. it is essentially a run down mall with dubious stores such as "Seen on TV."
We stopped at a pub and were served a Guinness in a plastic cup!
Enough said - Take a pass on this one.
Unique Suggestions:
Apparently there are historical locations. Those might help.
Fun Alternatives:
Practically any other mall in America
I concur with everyone here that Underground is a worthless destination. The city and developers have tried hard to force people to like the place, changing the laws (such as closing times for bars) to make it favorable for Underground... But my god, what a worthless place.
Unique Suggestions:
But if you have to go, do not go at night. Just go for a little shopping and site-seeing then leave promptly. If you have to go at night, take a notepad and write amusing descriptions of all the lame people you see.
Fun Alternatives:
If you want shopping, try a mall... Atlanta lacks a decent shopping area so malls are safe, if uninteresting, places to browse. The more adventurous can take a quick walk thru down North Highland Ave or at Little Five Points. There's an interesting antique store on Ponce de Leon Ave called Paris on Ponce. You could spend an hour or two in there. There's a cafe inside too.
If you want nightlife, the frat-boy meat-market scene is in Buckhead and Midtown. Some midtown bars are tolerable though... actually most of them are tolerable unless you are out on a Friday or Saturday night. If you want decent bars outside the main party areas, check out the Local, the Highlander, Apres Diem or 97 Estoria. They are a little bit off the main paths but thats what makes them better. If you are really adventurous and love great beer, take the train to Decatur and hit the Brickstore Pub... their upstairs bar is devoted to Belgian and Belgian style beers. Yum.
all i have to say is dont spend more then an hour at this location. its not what it use to be, and i wouldnt be suprised if the shut the place down soon
Unique Suggestions:
if u are there atleast take the time to read the markers along the way that tell u some interesting facts about the undergrounds history...
Fun Alternatives:
if u want to get shopping down, take the marta up to lneno mall. its 7 stops north from 5 points station and drops u right at the mall
Underground Atlanta is touted to be one of the biggest atractions in Atlanta... and I was eager to visit. Imagine my disappointment when it turned out to be just another shopping mall, but this time underground!!
Urgh!
Unique Suggestions:
Have you palm read... have a bite... buy a trinket... I'm just kidding!
The best you can do is just sit in the sun and enjoy the warmth.
Fun Alternatives:
There was a museum just around the corner (within a walking distance), which was dedicated to the Civil War. I found that really nice.
Underground Atlanta: While the history of Underground Atlanta is fascinating (the city built a second layer of streets over the area), the place is a tourist trap. The food here is bad to mediocre. The stores are nothing special and the same ones are located at malls. The nighttime entertainment is not worth the trip.
Underground Atlanta is a tourist trap but you should check it out anyway. The CNN Center is a tourist trap but check it out if you're interested in seeing a tour of CNN but make reservations one day in advance.
Underground Atlanta is a gang-ridden piece of garbage.
Don't even bother, unless you want to get shot, stabbed, or beaten in some particularly nasty way. That's why, even in broad daylight, I'm still hiding behind these trees to take this picture.
