the old pierce county jail was built in 1894. the building was once called the "hanging jail" because of it's central tower. the old pierce county jail is listed on the national register of historic places.

the area around downtown blackshear has scores of architecturally significant homes. blackshear was by passed by union general william t. sherman's army during the civil war and as a result there are a number of beautiful ante bellum and victorian homes still standing in downtown blackshear. for those interested in southern architecture downtown blackshear is worth a visit when in southeast georgia.

the atlantic and gulf railroad depot was built in 1857. the constuction of the railroad depot was the catalyst for the founding of the town of blackshear. today the atlantic and gulf depot is home to the pierce county historical society museum. the museum has an interesting collection of artifacts and relics relating to the civil war and the history of pierce county. the atlantic and gulf depot is a good first stop on a visit to blackshear. the atlantic and gulf railroad depot is listed on the national register of historic places.
