This was a pleasant tour of an old plantation estate that is totally preserved. It was a rice plantation and the blacks craved out the rows of water flow and irrigation for what was 7,300 acres, and 357 slaves It is now about 700 acres remaining, and a lot of that is in the marsh.
Tours are every hour on the hour, and a visitor center has a 17 minute film of the plantation life. The direction to the main house is through some woods, down a path, and there is also a path out to the old rice fields, with some still grown out by the marsh. The furnishings are plentiful and form mostly mid 1800's, as life would have been back then.
The estate main home was constructed in 1850, but the rice plantation was started around 1810. The Civil War aftermath caused the plantation to go into debt, and a lot of land sold to pay taxes. Rice was grown until 1913, by James Dent, son of the founder. His daughters lived her until 1973 when the last one died, and the estate was donated to State of Georgia

My mum married an American who lived in Brunswick, Georgia and I spent a lot of time there as a kid (12-16 yrs). The best of times, absolutely memorable and if you can make sure you spend a lot of time on St Simon's Island. I loved it there an dthere is a local saying which is very true and it goes something like this
"Once you get sand between your toes you will always want to return" or words to that effect and I tell you now, 30 years have passed and if I could get back there then I would!

Check out the beautiful old homes that are being renovated in the area south of downtown. In the downtown area, drive past the oldest tree in Brunswick...it is gigantic. Stop in for some shrimp at Spanky's on the Marsh. Drive to the outlet mall in Darien.

the beautiful neoclassic revival building was built in 1907. this building replaced the original court house that was damaged in a hurricane.

Take a tram tour of the 'cottages' of the Rockefellers and their friends in the Historic District.
The cottages are more like mansions and some of them are beautifully furnished.
