Port Columbus Civil War Naval Museum

by MatthewMetcalfe Updated Mar 1, 2005

Port Columbus is a Civil War Naval Museum located in Columbus Georgia not far from Ft. Benning.

The museum documents the history of confederate naval architecture with an emphasis on Iron Clads.

The centerpiece is the CSS Jackson which was the largest Confederate Ironclad ever built. Unfortunately it was destroyed by Union soldiers. What was excavated from the river though gives you a great picture on how large it was.

A much smaller ship, the CSS Chattahoochee is also on display. Sunk by it's own crew to avoid capture, there is more of the hull remaining than on the Jackson.

This is a great museum that covers an area of the Civil War that is not as well known as the large battlefields..

If you get a chance view Westville. It's a small town dedicated to the preservation of Historical homes from around the 1800's.
This town wasn't a real town back in the 1800's, but what makes it unique is the fact that all the homes and buildings are from that era and are open for people to view and walk through. They have no electricity but this town seems to function just fine without our modern comforts. They have a working cotton gin and little ladies who bake homemade ginger bread, biscuits and lemonade. And you get to watch everyone as they go about what would be normal every day chores for that era.
