    confederate civil war memorial

    the confederate civil war memorial is located in a small park a couple of blocks south of the courthouse on US 280. this monument has a standing solder motif which is common in the south. in november 1864 confederate georgia governor joseph e. brown fled to the cordele area to escape the army of union general w.t. sherman. for a few days in november 1864 a small farm house near present day cordele was the temporary capital of the state of georgia.

    downtown cordele has a number of beautiful late 19th and early 20th century homes in the downtown historic district. for those interested in architecture cordele has a number of interesting public buildings downtown.
