pictured is a 1913 chain gang wagon located next to the old county jail. this interesting relic reminded me of the movie "cool hand luke". in the early 20th century many southern prisoners performed road work as part of their jail sentence. the term chain gang came from the fact that these workers wore leg irons to prevent escape.

pictured is one of many historic and architectually interesting homes in downtown fitzgerald. the neighborhoods just south of downtown has a varied collection of colonial, greek revival, and victorian style homes. because fitzgerald was founded in 1885 most of these structures are post civil war.

the ben hill county courthouse was built in 1905 in the neoclassical style. the architect of the courthouse was h. h. huggins. what is unique about this courthouse is that there is no confederate civil war memorial. i would guess that since fitzgerald was founded after the civil war for union war veterans that is the reason for it's omission.
