Jekyll Island Airport by tpangelinan We couldn't believe this tiny island has an airport. The airport has a 3,700 foot runway so I would say the smaller the plain the better! This airport is only for private airplains and charter flights. When you come over the bridge and pay your toll, make a left on Riverview Drive and the airport is up on the left. Nantucket Clipper cruise ship by grandmaR Some small ships visit Jekyll Island - usually during either the autumn or the spring along the Intracoastal Waterway. AMERICAN EAGLE is one that I've seen tied up on the dock when we have been there. This is a nice looking small cruise ship that does short cruises on the ICW. Apparently they now run a dinner and/or gambling cruise from Jekyll on a boat called the EMERALD PRINCESS. Picture ID required. Saturday Evening Cruise... $20 per person All other cruises $10 per person Leave a Comment

Penske rental truck in Savannah by grandmaR I talked to Jan and Hank who are leaving their boat here for the winter and driving home. They want to drive because they are taking too much stuff off the boat to fly. Unfortunately, no local cars can be rented for a one way trip, nor can they be taken out of state. So they have to get a ride (I think they asked someone from the marina to take them rather than take a cab) to the Brunswick airport to rent a car. Then they have to go to Savannah to get a one way rental car that they can drive out of state. Next they have to drive two cars drive back to drop off the local car at the Brunswick airport before they can start out for home (they live in Columbia, MD). Finally when they get home, they can drop off the one-way rental. When they are coming back to the boat, the process will have to be reversed.. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

It is $3.00 every time you leave and reenter the causeway. It is more economical to buy a week long or weekend pass. You'll go off the island more than once (for dinner, a movie, shopping, what ever!) unless you are going to be secluded in your hotel/rental home...save your self money - and TIME - you won't have to stop at the pay booth if you have a pass! One nice way to see the village is by horse-drawn carriage. The carriage tours also leave from the welcome center, and they give you an opportunity to see the village at the pace of the original inhabitants. We didn't do this as I thought it would be too expensive, plus we didn't have time. The third photo advertises Victoria's Carriage or Trail Rides. The narrated carriage tour lasts 40 minutes. Jekyll does have an airport for small planes. And apparently they rent these little electric cars at the airport under construction Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

baby loggerhead by soundsgoodtome The nature center on Jekyll Island, affiliated with the University of Georgia, is a great place to learn about the natural ecology and wildlife of the island. There are many exhibits with live animals, and lots of information. Here you can sign up for nature walks, kayak tours, and other environmental learning programs. You especially shouldn't miss the baby loggerhead sea turtle pictured here. There are also baby alligators, turtles, fish, and much more. Best of all, the information and exhibits are free. Miles of coastal beach! by tpangelinan There is over 10 miles of Wide open beach on this island. The sand is very compact so bring a beach chair. We went in Feb 04 and it was t-shirt or less weather, we wish we had brought shorts ( IN FEBRUARY ) being from the cold north this was a treat! rocky seascape by soundsgoodtome Although a small island, there is much to see as far as nature goes. I especially recommend driving up the the northeast side of the island along the main loop road and parking alongside the road to go to the beach up here. It is very uncrowded and very beautiful. Part of the shoreline is rocky, but there is still plenty of white sand. The wind here is quite strong, which is a good thing because even on the hottest summer days the heat is bearable with the ocean breeze. As you can see, the tree branches facing the ocean are bent back from these winds. There are also short hiking trails all around the island, some of which go beside the salt marshes. These also should not be missed. Leave a Comment
