We went in Feb 04 and it was t-shirt or less weather, we wish we had brought shorts ( IN FEBRUARY ) being from the cold north this was a treat! The nature center on Jekyll Island, affiliated with the University of Georgia, is a great place to learn about the natural ecology and wildlife of the island. There are many exhibits with live animals, and lots of information. Here you can sign up for nature walks, kayak tours, and other environmental learning programs. You especially shouldn't miss the baby loggerhead sea turtle pictured here. There are also baby alligators, turtles, fish, and much more. Best of all, the information and exhibits are free. Although a small island, there is much to see as far as nature goes. I especially recommend driving up the the northeast side of the island along the main loop road and parking alongside the road to go to the beach up here. It is very uncrowded and very beautiful. Part of the shoreline is rocky, but there is still plenty of white sand. The wind here is quite strong, which is a good thing because even on the hottest summer days the heat is bearable with the ocean breeze. As you can see, the tree branches facing the ocean are bent back from these winds. There are also short hiking trails all around the island, some of which go beside the salt marshes. These also should not be missed. Leave a Comment

The most unusual beach I've seen. This beach is filled with HUGE trees that supposedly washed up during Hurricane Hugo. You can literally sit under a live oak (in the shade) and watch your kids playing among the driftwood in the surf. Leave a Comment Address: North end of island

When we came to Jekyll Island, we wanted a good way to explore the natural areas of this beautiful place. We found the perfect way to do this is by kayak. My sister had kayaked before, but my mom and I had not. We had an experienced guide show us how to get around in the kayaks well, and then he took us out around the salt marshes, giving us a lesson on the local ecology while allowing us to explore where we wanted. It was a great experience and we have since went kayaking in other places we've traveled to. I recommend kayaking for anyone who doesn't mind getting a little sun and getting wet to see the natural side of Jekyll Island. Leave a Comment

Go to the north end of the island and look for the openning in the trees. PARK! Bring your camera, more batteries may be needed. Walk through the trees to the beach and there it is, the most driftwood you have ever seen. Great for photos! Leave a Comment

Jekyll Island is full of historical sites. One of the most impressive was the yacht club. "The richest, the most exclusive and most inaccessible club in the world." This proclamation, by Munsey's Magazine in 1904, summed up the renowned status of the Jekyll Island Club. Founded in 1886, it was the winter retreat for some of America's most elite families. Club rolls included such names as Morgan, Astor, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt and Pulitzer. Here, on this small barrier island off Georgia's beautiful coast, they shaped a private world of grand cottage residences around a Queen Anne-style clubhouse. Leave a Comment

Jekyll Island has three sites on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail. More than 300 species of birds (75 percent of the total species of birds seen in Georgia) have been seen along the birding trail. The three sites in Georgia are the Causeway (two different sites), the North End Beach and the South End Beach. Free for the Causeway, although if you go to the island beaches you will have to pay the $3 parking fee. Available 24 hours/day. Types of birds on the Causeway are shorebirds, wading birds, birds of prey, waterfowl (especially in the winter) Specific birds at the causeway sites: Osprey, bald eagle, clapper rail, northern harrier, roseate spoonbill, red knot, black-necked stilt, white ibis, wood stork Shorebirds are best seen at low tide from mid-summer through spring. Look for nesting ospreys in spring and summer. Listen for clapper rails and marsh wrens in the salt marshes. Watch for northern harriers flying low over the marsh in winter. Look for roseate spoonbills in summer. Unfortunately, I did not have time to go birding here, and all the photos were taken at other locations.
