    on april 12 th 1862 the great locomotive chase went through the town of resaca. the steam engine texas was pursuing the stolen steam engine the general. at the pictured intersection the general stopped by for water and was fired upon by confederate troops. the general continued on to ringgold until it ran out of fuel.
    later in the civil war this same site was the location of a minor civil war skirmish. union colonel s. m. archer of the 17 th iowa infantry was garrisoned here to protect a western & atlantic railway bridge. on october 13 th 1864 general a. p. stewart's corp with the aid of selden's alabama battery shelled the garrison and the union troops were forced to surrender.

    the resaca confederate cemetery was established by miss mary j. green in 1866. miss green with the help of many resaca residents located and removed confederate dead from the resaca battlefield and interned their remains in resaca cemetery.

    the battle of resaca was the first battle of the atlanta campaign during the civil war. the forces of union general william t. sherman and confederate general joseph johnson met at resaca on may 14 th 1864. after a bloody battle the union forces were repulsed by johnson's troops. later general johnson withdrew to adairsville georgia where a second battle was fought there three days later. union general benjamin harrison fought in the battle of resaca. later harrison was to become president of the united states. a new visitor center at the site of the battle of resaca is do to open in 2010.
