Books to Read About Savannah Area by deecat Not really for packing, but great background before you go to the Savannah area: Eugenia Price's Historical Novels: 1. Savannah Quartet a. Savannah b. To See Your Face Again c. Before The Darkness Falls d. Stranger in Savannah 2. Georgia Trilogy a. Bright Captivity b. Where Shadows Go c. Beauty From Ashes 3. St. Simmons Trilogy a. Lighthouse b. New Moon Rising c.The Beloved Invader Although these are novels, Ms Price gives her characters a well-documented historical background ***********************************************************<br /> The book that "put Savannah on the map!". John Berendt Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil "This is the story of Jim Williams, a socialite antique dealer accused of killing a local tough named Danny Hansford. Although it's a murder mystery, the appeal of the book is its portrait of Savannah's hedonistic aristocrats and flamboyant ne'er do wells"
If you go in the summer, I advice wearing cotton. It is so hot and so humid that regardless, you will sweat!
Because Savannah is such a lovely city, it is imperative to have your camera "at the ready"! Leave a Comment

Tourists often carry backpacks.
Winter: You'll probably need a coat (or at least a warm jacket) - bring clothes that layer well. It can get really cold, but the weather is very unpredictable. Autumn: Jeans and a light jacket or sweater will do. You'll probably want to bring a few short sleeved shirts also... again, layering. Spring & Summer: Shorts and tank tops/short sleeve shirts are ideal. Even in the summer though, you might want to bring a sweater/light jacket - with the boiling temps outside, restaurant managers turn the air to freezing! Shoes: Bring your most comfortable pair! A lot of bars/restaurants are casual, so don't worry too much about dressing up (unless you just want to!) If you're wearing a casual dress/skirt, wear flipflops/sandles instead of heels. Hat/Scarf/Etc: It's very humid during Spring/Summer... you might want to bring something if your hair tends to frizz.
Sunscreen! (even in the winter)
Bring your camera and a disposable one - if you want a stranger to take a picture of you standing in front of something, you wouldn't want to give them your good camera.
If you're going to Tybee (Savannah Beach) bring a bathing suit, beach towl, beach chair, cooler, etc.
Bring both sunglasses and an umbrella - it's either extremely sunny or pouring down rain (often times, both!) Leave a Comment

by anaisdreams whatever isn't an inconvenience for you
Savannah is very humid from February to October..If it is 80 f in the daytime- it may be 78 f that night- so bring light dresses and shorts and flip flops for day & evening.Men may be stifled in suits at night- khakis and a short sleeve button up shirt are OK.
BUG SPRAY!!!!! trust me- if you are walking at all, you will need it. Sunglasses and sun screen. Leave a Comment

A must have here is Mega Hold hairspray, the humidity will make your hair go flat in no time..Of course you don't HAVE to pack it cuz you can always buy it once you get there. :-) Leave a Comment

by steph4867 Comfy walking shoes... Savannah is mostly flat and easy on your feet, but you will be walking a lot. And if you stick to the Historic District and Riverfront, the cobblestones will wear out your shins.
Plenty of film!!!
Absolutely do not forget your Bug Spray - I was the main course for those blood suckers the entire weekend... came home one great big mosquito bite. Leave a Comment

by xtaberx Of course, I'm gonna have to recommend comfortable walking shoes. There is no such thing as driving around Savannah and getting even the slightest idea for what an awesome place you're in -- put the car somewhere, and walk everywhere you can. As far as the weather goes, though, Savannah does get pretty sultry in the summer months, and with all the walking you're going to be doing, I would recommend bringing a water bottle and keeping yourself hydrated through the middle of the day, but be aware that opportunities to use a bathroom in the Historic District are not abundant.
Keep in mind when you're packing that Savannah, though it is a modern, cosmopolitan city, is situated smack dab in the middle of the vast festering swamps of the southeast, and as a result you will encounter native insect life in the form of mosquitoes large enough to be classified as aircraft by the FAA. (Just a little mosquito humor there . . . yeah) So you might want to have some bug repellant with you, especially if you're planning on striking out for Skidaway Island or any similar outdoorsy sort of attraction.
Bring your own. The tourist shops near the riverfront generally charge a lot for film, batteries, and so forth.
If you're headed to Tybee Island, the beach is terrific, so enjoy, but don't plan on doing any surfing there -- it's restricted on most of the beach, and the surf is pretty weak anyhow. So tanning lotion, yes, but surfboard, don't bother.
Bring nice pens and writing paper, and write to your friends and family back home while you're sitting on a square bench or by the riverfront or something Savannah-esque like that. Savannah somehow inspires this method of communication with its slow-paced demeanor, and it's an inspiration that I highly recommend acting upon. Leave a Comment

by b1bob It can be hot and humid in the summer. Savannah winters are milder than in many places in the U.S. , so pack accordingly.
Given Savannah's proximity to the waterfront, mosquito repellent would be a good idea.
A good camera like the one pictured and, for goodness sakes, take more photos than my parents did when we went. Leave a Comment

by acemj A copy of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Berendt. The 1994 best-seller set in Savannah is a good read. If you don't want to pack it, it's not a problem. It will be in the store window of every bookstore in town. As a matter of fact, locals really love this book and why not? Tourism increased by 46% after its release! In town, it's simply known as The Book. Leave a Comment

by richiecdisc Savannah is a steamy romantic city so it's nice to have someone to stroll hand in hand with. I never stopped on my many trips north from Florida to New Jersey but this year I'm happy that Doreen gave me good reason to do so. Leave a Comment
