This restaurant came into existence because one of the owners regularly caught so much fish and had nothing to do with it, they decided to sell it at the restaurant! Portions are ample and reasonably priced considering it's right in the center of the prime tourist area.

Once a car garage, this cavernous restaurant is kitschy and loosely elegant at the same time.
Favorite Dish: Their signature sandwich is a lump crabmeat with Russian dressing on a griddled challah roll. They have nice salads and generous portions

I first was introduced to Clary's Cafe via "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". Thank goodness for John Berendt! Clary's is true Southern Charm and genuine Savannah right at your fingertips. You enter this small diner thinking you're getting just another run-of-the-mill burger or omelete. You are not! You end up with a feast the likes of which you've never tasted before.
Favorite Dish: Crab cakes!

This originally was a boarding house with a dining room for boarders. At street level it appears to be an average residential address. But starting at 11:00 am the side door opens and you are seated at long tables fitting 10 people per table and you eat what's put in front of you- true boarding house style. The menu changes a little each day and according to the seasons, but everything is decidedly 'Old Southern' cooking. A very unique experience, to say the least.

My husband and I were visiting Savannah last weekend and as he is a 6'1" blonde Teutonic type he immediately became enamored with the thought of "hood juice" something that Nikki offers. So we trekked on down MLK Boulevard to Mom and Nikki's. When we arrived at noon on a Saturday it wasn't crowded at all and Nikki greeted us in Southern fashion with a "Hey." Me being me, I walked right up to her and said that we had never been in before and that she would have to maneuver us through what we were supposed to do. She was very obliging and described everything on her menu in detail, as well as offering us a taste of anything we might want. I opted for the chicken, stewed squash and green beans and mac and cheese. Having a father from the South and a mother that cooks like she is as well as loving to cook myself, I had no problem inhaling her perfectly seasoned food. Not too salty, not greasy, just good. My husband had the liver and it was nice and tender. My only regret was that I couldn't fit a side of smothered shrimp into my gullet. Nikki was as nice as could be, refilled our tea glasses regularly (she was out of hood juice but my husband recovered nicely) and the food was cooked properly but simply, as all good food should be. She thanked us when we left and we promised to visit again, which we plan to do! I will say in all unfairness it was a little nerve wracking as we walked to the restaurant (political correctness and all that) but we had no problems and one of the best lunches we've had in Savannah.

Favorite Dish: The chicken melted in your mouth and I've made the stewed squash a number of times I liked it so well.

Listen, this is not a spectacular restaurant. You will get good food. You will get good service. They have a tremendous turnover in patrons as it is on the river. And if you are lucky, you will get Jonathan, the funniest waiter this side of the Mason Dixon line. We arrived at Huey's at 8:30 on a Saturday night without a reservation, so it was going to be a 30 minute wait. We sat at the bar and sipped on some beer while we waited and were seated at a little past nine. Now mind you there was a 15 top next to us that was drunk, rowdy, particular and monopolizing the kitchen's time, but our waiter Jonathan made sure that we were properly taken care of, teas and water and beer refilled promptly, gently scolded for not eating our cornbread (we were stuffed) and thank goodness, prompt return of our paid check so that we could leave. But we had a great time and I would definitely recommend the fried green tomatoes and the etoufee.

Husband and I went for dinner on a Saturday night. We arrived promptly at the time of our reservation and were seated immediately. The Sapphire Grill has more than one floor but we were on the first floor and happy to be there. Our waiter, Ernie, was very attentive from the time that we sat down and provided us with excellent service. I was thrilled to see that everyone was dressed for dinner in a fine dining establishment and hope that they continue to if not officially enforce then advise those who come to restaurants in shorts and flip flops that they should dress for dinner. We were recommended a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc which was very good, and complimented the to die for diver scallops and even my husband's pork cheeks beautifully thanks to the knowledge of Ernie. I had the house specialty grouper for dinner and my husband had the tuna rare, again on Ernie's recommendation. We lingered and savored for as long as we possibly could. The food was excellent! When we ordered a creme brulee for dessert and I was searching for a wine choice, even Ernie was stumped and sought the counsel of the bar staff who recommended an excellent Malbec that perfectly complimented the tartness of the berries and the sweetness of the brulee. Dinner for two with wine was $187 and it was an unforgettable experience. As a bonus, I believe we were told that everything except for the scallops is purchased locally to give back. So you can believe that everything was very fresh and extremely tasty.
Favorite Dish: The Seared Diver Scallops, Eggplant Caviar, Fried Quail Egg & Endive made me pause and just stare at my plate for a moment. It was that good. I almost hated to eat it. Very large scallops seared perfectly, complimented by the eggplant, enhanced by the richness of the quail egg. It was simply perfect food.

It's my understanding that Nikki's has moved from what used to be strictly takeaway to her new location of MLK Boulevard. My husband and I visited on a Saturday at lunchtime and were warmly greeted by Nikki herself. Mom was sitting at a nearby table chatting with a friend. Nikki detailed the five different kinds of meat she had available that day, as well as the sides. The food is served cafeteria style and she has no problem loading up your plate! Meat and three with sweet tea for two was $18 and change. My husband was disappointed to know that she was out of hood juice but he survived. We walked from our hotel, the Thunderbird Inn and it took about 20 minutes but there is parking nearby. This is some great food and that's from somebody who loves to cook and eat!
Favorite Dish: I tried the baked chicken. Fall off the bone tender, simply seasoned, delicious! For sides I had green beans, squash and mac and cheese and I couldn't have made any of them better myself. Even the tea was good and I'm not a big fan of sweet tea. My husband had the liver and you barely had to chew it. It was all great!

Great place, fun neighborhood. Very vegetarian friendly, although the menu's got something for everyone. We both really liked the interestingly-spiced macaroni and cheese with the tofu (optional) added on.
Favorite Dish: Dressed Up Mac ‘n’ Cheese (with tofu): spice, starch, and cheese -- who could ask for more?
