If you are south of the Mason-Dixon, Shoney's is never a bad place to eat.

I like both their Chicken Caesar and their Fried Chicken Salads.
My wife chose the Fish and Shrimp.
Both meals were done quickly and to our taste. The lettuce was crisp and the meat and fish were flavorful. Add a cup of coffee and a dessert (we split one of the Walnut Brownies Ala Mode) and we're happy campers.

The service was good and earned a nice tip. The restaurant was "perky" in its red-and-white decor and so clean that you could have eaten off the tables.
The cost was about $15 for the two of us (2003).

Fernando's of Martha's Vineyard: Inferior Service, Inflated Prices

A very miserable dining experience here. We had reservations for a group of 22 senior ladies. We were assured prior to the evening that we would be on the first floor. Upon arrival, we were upstairs in a building with no elevator and several in our party found it an extreme hardship. Before the event, our reservation was lost (or there was some confusion) and it was only because of diligence on our part that we got there at all. I wish now we had not. Our reservation was for 5:30, so we could make an 8 p.m. theatre call. We were served by one waiter, whom we learned was a new hire. Dinners were mixed up (one person receiving the wrong dinner, one dinner fixed that no one ordered). But the worst came when we finished eating, about 7 p.m. Checks THEN had to be prepared---the waiter actually came around and asked everyone what they had. Then he couldn't get the upstairs cash register to work (or didn't know how). We had to stand on the narrow staircase, all 22 of us, while he attempted to work the one downstairs. Which he couldn't work, either. The last of our party finally got out of the restaurant at 7:55 and were late to the theatre. Fifty-five minutes to check out! The food was not spectacular, either. I would warn anyone about eating at this place!

Moon River Brewing Company: great food and local beer

The food, staff and beer are wonderful. I love this place. It's conveniently located, it's reasonably priced and it's just a good place to go. They have a good menu with a large variety of things from appetizers and salads to sandwiches and entrees. Also, they have a good selection of vegetarian items if that's an issue. Locals seem to come here after work for a drink and we didn't notice other tourists, so the atmosphere is perhaps more genuinely local than on River Street

Favorite Dish: I've had the crab melt and the shiitake asparagus salad. Both were excellent and like $6.00. I want to get back and try the entrees because they look wonderful too.
And of course, the beer!

**we returned here in 2006 and it's still a great place to eat. In fact, Bobby and I had both been here separately in the past and decided that we had to return. This time I got a turkey wrap and rice. Very good. We both had beer--Bobby and IPA and me an amber. But they do have a sweet potato beer right now which would be interesting to try.**

Huey's: A Little New Orleans in Savanah

Very good Cajun restaurant right on River Street. I really enjoyed the food at this casual dining restaurant but the service was lacking a lot. The hostess was absent for several minutes at a time while those who came up wanting a seat just had to stand there wondering what to do. The waiter was very inattentive. Basically you would have to wait for several minutes before you got a refill on your drink. It also took forever to get the bill when done. We ate there twice and had the same experience both times (great food, sorry service).

Favorite Dish: Fried Catfish was great. My wife and Son really like the crab cake sandwich. The shrimp and crab meat au gratin was very good too.

River House Seafood and Bakery: Best Seafood in Savannah

This place was featured on Turner South's 3 Day Weekend show. I know why, it was great. I will say it was the best restaurant that we ate at during our seven day stay in Savannah. Located on historic River Street, it is in a nicely renovated old building. The service was great and the food was excellent. Be warned though, not only was it the best restaurant I ate at but also the most expensive (appetizer, entree, drinks, desert + tip for four = $170).

Favorite Dish: Oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer was great. Baked Salmon Duchesse was great.

The Pirate's House: The Pirate's House in Savannah

Very good Southern cuisine along with seafood dishes. Don't miss the lunch Plantation buffet which appears to be the most popular choice. The buffet has great fried chicken and many more great side dishes. This might be a controversial statement, but I liked the Plantation buffet at The Pirate House better than the buffet at The Lady and Sons. The outside of the restaurant (facing Broad Street) looks like a complete dump, but is very nice once you get inside. They encourage you to tour the facility and they have done a great job with the decor. Bottom line, I have to highly recommend the place. Good family atmosphere.

Favorite Dish: Get the Plantation buffet if you are there for lunch. Great selection.

Boar's Head: Boar's Head on River Street

Nice seafood restaurant on River Street. This is not the best seafood restaurant on River Street but it is good. Good service and very nice older historic building right on River Street. Good news for a family guy like me is they have a kids menu which keeps the cost down. One claim that is made about this restaurant is that it is the oldest in Savannah.

Favorite Dish: BBQ shrimp appetizer is very good. Stuff grouper was excellent.

Tapas: Twist on Traditional Southern Cuisine
nc_rebel profile photo

nc_rebel 13 reviews

Tapas was an interesting place. We ate there for lunch. The have statue of Marilynn Monroe in the front of the restaurant. You have your choice of eating inside or outside. It was too hot that day so we selected inside. The interior is kind of modern with a mix of historic. The food is a fusion of traditional Southern dishes with international ones (primarily seafood). Overall the food was good. I got the tune steak with She Crab soup. My son got the crab rangoon. Everything is a la carte which can add up if your not careful.

Favorite Dish: Tuna Steak and she crab soup

Churchill's Pub and Restaurant: English Food in Savannah
nc_rebel profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

nc_rebel 13 reviews

I now know why England is not known for its Food. In all seriousness, the food is okay but the appeal of this place is really the pub atmosphere. If you want a great place to go drinking then this is the place for you. The restaurant is located right on Bay Street across from the Hyatt Regency in a nicely renovated old historic building. Nice atmosphere to the place. Basically the menu has a mixture of traditional English dishes with a mixture of American and seafood dishes. My wife and daughter were happy with their food choices (baby back ribs and sheppard’s pie). My tuna steak was not very good.

Favorite Dish: If you drink then try the many beer choices. Stick with the traditional English dishes.

Lady and Son's Restaurant
1 more image

Eating at The Lady and Sons appears to be the "must thing to do" when visiting Savannah. I like Paula Dean's cooking show on the Food Network so we decided to try out her restaurant. We went on a Monday in order to miss the crowds. Guess what? They are packed for lunch even on Mondays! We got there at 10:00 am and waited in a long line just to get our name on the list. I was able to acquire an 11:30 am lunch table. You have to stand across the street around your designated time and wait for them to call your name. Once inside we ordered the buffet in order to sample the many dishes. In my opinion, the food is good but is overrated for everything you have to put up with just to get into the restaurant. The restaurant is in an old historic building off Congress street close to the City Market. The inside of the building is nice. Looks like they take up the first three floors.

Favorite Dish: Buffet allows you to sample the pulled pork, fried chicken and the many sides. The sides were very good. The chicken was good but not as ood as I would have expected.
