This Square honors the fourth USA president, James Madison. It was laid out in 1837.

The Square features a statue to Sergeant William Jasper, a hero of the Battle of Savannah in 1779. Sergeant Jasper, an Irish national who was offered a commission for bravery at the Battle of Fort Moultrie in Charleston in 1776 - he refused the commission because he could not read or write - led the American charge at Spring Hill, just west of town, to pierce the British line. The assault on the British line ended in defeat for the Americans, and Jasper was buried in a mass-grave with the other Continentals, French, and Irish who were killed that day.

Have a look at the picture of the brass plate.

    Gryphon Tea Room

While we were on our self guided walking tour we stopped by the Gryphon Tea Room to have a look at it but not stop to have a drink or bite to eat. The tea room is located in a historic building formerly a turn of the century pharmacy with 14 original stained glass windows and antique furnishings.

Magnificent old beautiful southern homes surrounded the square. St. John's Church steeple adorned one corner and the Savannah College of Art & Design another. Benches, monuments & big old weeping trees filled the Square.
