I would not normally write up a chain like Waffle House but I had a lot of fun here. The place was pretty empty and the workers asked if I minded if they turned up the music. They did and they sang along, danced and had a great time. I did too (no dancing),

So be sure to lock your cars, keep your wallets and purses secure and watch where you are and who is watching you. Don't act like a tourist and you are less likely to be targeted.

This is a relatively small research project (40 acres) in which plants native to Georgia are being nourished and displayed in a natural setting for scientific and tourism purposes.
There are a dozen of these areas up and down the Atlantic coast of USA. They are associated to colleges who have studies in ecology and commercial use of and impact to the flora of the area. The one in Tifton is under the auspices of the University of Georgia. The oldest unit is the Upper Coastal Plain in Rocky Mount, Georgia (100 years) and the newest is the one in Tifton (20 years).
Self-guided tours around the area will allow you to see the azalea gardens and over 250 varieties of local flora. There is a stream through the arboretum that supports species of water plants. The research part of the arboretum is dedicated to crops that are native to the area and the wildlife that live off of those crops. On any given weekend you may stumble on to a group of students being instructed on the benefits of agriculture practices in Georgia and there is no problem with standing among the students and listening or trailing behind them as they tour the grounds.
Everything is free (donations accepted) and you can stay from 9am to 5pm.
