Factory Second Stores - not always a bargain

by kammeres Written Oct 30, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are strings of these places all along I-75 in South Georgia. The biggest collection I've seen is in Lake Park, just a few miles north of the Florida Border, with multiple strings of these stores along both sides of the interstate highway. For those not familiar with factory second stores, they're more or less dumping grounds for discontinued merchandise or clothing with "small" aberrations in the stitching, sizes and shapes, basically anything that didn't pass quality control at the main factory. So, to minimize losses, companies ships these items far away alongside a highway to capitalize on the steady flow of tourists, and where better than I-75 with throngs of folks coming down from Canada and the Rust Belt to enjoy the Florida sun? Oh yes, they're name brand merchandise, Russell Athletic, Levi's, etc., offering deep discounts, but remember the age-old motto, you get what you pay for. If you don't mind a crooked seam, no problem, but be careful, many items have serious defects such as inches of difference in leg length on jeans. Caveat Emptor, big time.

Unique Suggestions: Hit them after big holidays where everything is marked down. Take your time, look over all the merchandise, try it on first. Or, just pass them up. In many cases you'll find the discount really isn't that great. Many of these places employ that jewelry store trick of signs screaming HUGE DISCOUNTS and the "discounted" price isn't really that great, it's just an inflated price deflated to normal. Go to Target or Wal-Mart, instead, the people are friendlier and where else in the world can you find a two-liter bottle of soda for 58 cents? By the way, that price has not changed since 1995.

Underground Atlanta, Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollyweird
UA: overrated mall with tourist junk, cool flag store though
HRC: you know that lame routine, have a pricy meal, drinks, and buy souvenir t-shirt available at all HRCs worldwide, yawn.
PH: same lame game. Shame. No fame. Too tame. No flame.
