    Meter Maids Are Ruthless!

by ChicagoHeidi Written Jun 28, 2006

There is plenty of parking in the beachfront parking lots. It's only $3 for the first hour and then a $1 more each hour thereafter. There are meters for every single available parking spot on the island and for $.25, you get about 15 minutes or so. You can load up the meter, no problem. But there are people on bikes who meticulously ride up and down the streets just WAITING for your meter to say TIMES UP! And then they pounce and write you up! So watch the time...

Be sure to bring plenty of quarters, the local merchants gave me an eye roll! I had no idea when I went and broke a $20 bill at a Subway, and they still would only give me $1.50 in quarters.

  • Theft from cars

Secure your belongings! Especially during holidays and crowded times, things can get stolen from cars. This was primarily the result of a particular group recently, but it doesn't help to get the warning out - don't leave valuables in full view in your parked car.

  • TOO MANY PARKING TICKETS!

The police or meter maids or whatever they are must be in every nook and cranny. You can't even relax on the beach without worrying that you have run out of time and received your ticket. They pass by each minor location (tiny beach access sand parking areas) about 3 times per hour. Also, do NOT park 'against the flow' in these tiny sandy parking areas or you'll get a ticket for that too...against WHAT flow?? They are little dead-end holes in the wall! They claim that they make improvements with the fines they collect...I think they buy additional parking meters. Tybee-don't take advantage of your visitors...the place is already second or third rate as it is.

The Tybee Island Police have only 3 miles to cover- and cover it they do!
they are a great bunch-but, if the speed limit says 3o mph.DO iT! they will pull you over!
they are always looking for tourists b/c they need to keep peace with the locals and the locals usually are obeying the rules.
    DON"T drink & drive!!!!!
they are always having road blocks etc...be safe and take it slow.
