There are several trails to choose from and some are easy strolls while others are backcountry hikes. The trails are well marked and easy to follow. It all depends on how much time you have and how far you want to go.
For those with limited time or who just want to take it easy, take the lake trail to the falls. It starts near the footbridge at the edge of the parking lot. The short and scenic nature trail is another easy option. For those seeking adventure, take one of the backcountry trails to Neels Gap or Duncan Ridge. And be sure to email me a photo or two.
I visited this park on a whim. Driving back from Brasstown Bald, I saw the signs for the turnoff and decided to go explore. When I reached the entrance, the ranger asked if I wanted some suggestions about places to visit within the park. Since I knew nothing about it, I was eager for some ideas.
The ranger told me about the falls. It was a good thing as I would have never found them. They're not all that hidden as there is a short spur trail off the main lake trail, but I didn't know that and probably would not have ventured in this direction. The falls are definitely worth seeing, especially if your visit to the park is a short one. Its about a 20 minute walk from the visitor center parking lot halfway around the lake and down the short and somewhat steep path to the bottom of the falls. You can hear the sound of rushing water from alongside the lake but the falls are completely hidden from view.
This is a very easy trail that loops around the lake and under the scores of trees that flank its shoreline. The lake is a popular place and this trail is not the place to go for solitude. There are picnic tables near the visitor's center and benches set up along the way. Many people come here to fish, swim or rent paddle boats too. e trail branches off and leads to a semi hidden waterfall. See the next tip for details.
The lake is the most popular destination in the summer as Georgia residents from the north and south come to this park to cool off from the hot and humid temperatures. Swimming is allowed in the lake and the small strip of beach is a perfect place for wading in. The lake is also stocked with trout and you'll find people scattered alongside casting their lines. Paddle boats are available for rent as well.
After a long walk the water felt fresh and cool. If you plan to visit in the summer, bring a bathing suit.
