No-See-Ums
by grandmaR
In the evening near water, or in the forest (scuffling through the leaves), you may be bitten by no-see-ums. These are very tiny gnats (sand flies or biting midges) but their mouth must be bigger than they are. British folks call them punkies. Not only are they so tiny that three fit on the head of a pin, but they have a wing beat of over 1000 times/sec. The only way you can see them at a distance is thru the filtered forest sunlight... little specks of pocket lint floating in the sunThey have a pound-for-pound bite far ahead of their horsefly or deerfly relatives and they don't whine to warn you that they are coming like mosquitos do. They don't suck....they bite. Actually, they chew up a little place on your skin and, much as the mosquito regurgitate a little spit to keep everything flowing while they dine.... The tip off that you have made the acquaintance of Ms. Ceratopogonidae, AKA,...

Men that stalk single women!
by ArenJo
Be careful if you are a single woman walking around the airport hotel areas. The men are very forward and they don't give up. I am a flight attendant, so I'm in these areas often. I've heard of other women being followed to their rooms. So, be very careful and watch your surroundings. Ignore the men!
3 Reasons to By-Pass Georgia by Boat
by grandmaR
1. Because of NIMBY type complaints, there is a law in Georgia making it illegal to live on a boat there. Transients don't usually have any trouble, but some marinas will not take boaters for more than 30 days in a calendar year.2. Tremendous tides which make it difficult to anchor without finding yourself aground at low tide, and also make the channels impassible in some places at low tide. This has not been helped by the fact that Georgia has not maintained the state coastal waterways.3. Featureless low lying marshy areas which make development and transportation difficult. On the good side this means that it is quiet. On the bad side it means that there are no services such as places to get fuel or to tie up to a dock.Because of these reasons, we have gone offshore from Charleston to Florida (or vice versa) for the last 3 trips.

Severe weather
by goingsolo
The south gets its fair share of bad weather and extremes. In 2005, Atlanta had its first ice storm in years, shutting the city down for a full day. That summer, a severe heat wave hovered over the city and the northern part of the state, raising temperatures to practically 100 degrees and covering the area with a thick layer of smog. I was privileged enough to be in town for both events, and neither was much fun. If you're travelling to the state, its best to check and see if Mother Nature has ordered up any extremes for the time of your visit.
GET A MAP!! REALLY
by joeladamford
As soon as you get near Atlanta buy a map. You can get a good map at any decent gas station; I suggest the Rand McNally map. Use this map to avoid ALL interstates. 8:00 am rush hour starts from 7:00 to 9:30. The 5:00 pm rush hour is between 3:00 and 6:30. Friday’s rush hour starts on Thursday and ends on Saturday. You’ve been warned!
Avoid speaking to...

Avoid speaking to pan-handlers. Avoid south side of downtown and points south due to seedy areas. The general rule is downtown, midtown, buckhead, and points north of these tends to have fewer problems crimewise than points south. Be careful in Buckhead....fights tend to break out at some of the nightclubs. tons of nightclubs in Buckhead, parking minutely limited. Better luck in Midtown club area.

When you go out at night take the BIGGEST can of OFF you can buy with you. Nobody told me that in July the have misqutio the size of small dogs and in droves. On Jekyell Island at the peir we went fishing and my husbund caught a shark. This is when we found out this part of the island was the largest breeding waters for shark on hte eastern coast. The locals did tell us they hae never had an attack to date& that swiming was safe because te sharks don't like the warm water durning the day and only come close at night. Also so long as dolphin was around the sharks would not be. This proved true, a shrimp boat was around at the same area we were fishing , dophin hover around to get the left overs NO SHARKS that night.
Please help protect the dunes!
by tpangelinan
Please be careful not to walk on the dune, they are protected and you can get a fine, so please use the very nice wide beach access that the island provides. Thanks for you support.
