by KiNyA Go in the Jaggar Museusm where you can learn about the different kinds of lava: the a'a, which moves slowly in rough chunks, and the pahoehone, which runs more quickly, giving it a smooth surface. The museum also has displays on the many legends of the volcano, starring Madame Pele, the famous Volcano goddes who, according to Hawaiian myth and legend, tricks and kills unwary men. From the same place you can get a stunning lookout to Kilauea's caldera. Leave a Comment

Front page of the guide. by Jerelis We Dutchies are very famous for the fact that we like things to get for free! LOL. The Hawaii Volcanoes Official Map and Guide is free but also very usefull. We recieved this one at the information centre and were glad to have one. We took 2 of them and used one for our Diary of a madman and the other one was for the very useful information and maps. Here is a summary of the information found in the Hawaii Volcanoes Official Map and Guide: * Information of facilities, services and programs; * Warning about hiking; * Detailed map of the region; * Climate information; * Park Programs; * Wildlife information; * Places to visit; * Et cetera. Take your Hawaii Volcanoes Official Map and Guide, because it's very usefull. Leave a Comment

You may see flowers, fruit, or bottles of booze near the craters. What are these things doing here? They are thought to be things that the goddess Pele favored and are offered to her. Leave a Comment

Offers made for the god Pele at the rim. by Jerelis Halema'uma'u is the home of Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Hawaiian volcanoes. The ancient traditions are honored and practiced here by native Hawaiians. It is not unusual to see offerings to Pele, such as sacred Hawaiian plants, left on the rim of the crater. Please respect this area! The Halema'uma'u Crater Overlook is a 10 minute walk from the parking area. From the overlook you look down directly into Pele's home. Leave a Comment

Solidified Lava Flow by Blatherwick It is said that if any volcanic rock is taken from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (or anywhere in Hawaii) that the person that took it will be cursed until it is returned. The same is true for black sand. Leave a Comment

by Mez77 Plenty of the locals were out early in the morning for a spot of paddling. All sorts of people, including men, women and children were setting up for the day when we passed through. The beach we were on was covered in black volcanic sand, which was unique. Leave a Comment
