An old volcanologist outfit. by Jerelis The Jaggar Museum is one of the busiest location in the National Park. Take it for granted and move around in your own pace. It's also a must visit, beacuse it tells you all about the National Park, which is sometime essential to know. Inside the museum you will find videos of volcanic activity, geologic displays and lots of working seismographs. It's really fun to see it all and have explinations how everything is working. Also a tiltmeter is on display in the museum providing real-time data about the volcanoes. The Jaggar Museum has an overlook which offers a splendid view into the Kilauea Caldera and the Halema'uma'u Crater. The museum also has very large windows which afford a sheltered view when the weather is inclement. Leave a Comment

A describtion how the lava is able to erupt. by Jerelis Also a tiltmeter is on display in the museum providing real-time data about the volcanoes. Rapid increase in tilt can indicate that magma is accumulating at shallow levels within the volcano and is often a precursor to an eruption. Rapid decreases in tilt can indicate that magma is draining at shallow leaves within the volcano and moving into a rift zone. Movement of magma into a rift zone is often a precursor to a flank eruption. The Jaggar Museum has an overlook which offers a splendid view into the Kilauea Caldera and the Halema'uma'u Crater. The museum also has very large windows which afford a sheltered view when the weather is inclement. Leave a Comment

Entrance sign of the museum. by Jerelis At the westside of the Kilauea Caldera at the Crater Rim Drive you'll find the Jaggar Museum. This museum is named after Dr. Thomas Jaggar of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jaggar believed that loss of life and property from volcanic eruptions could be minimized by better understanding the ways that volcanoes work. He developed many methods to study Hawaiian volcanoes, including the use of seismographs to study the size, number and distribution of earthquakes associated with the volcanoes. The Jaggar Museum is one of the busiest location in the National Park. We found out that a lot of people just visit this museum, take some pictures and say "So, I have been to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park" and then just leave! Leave a Comment
