Favorite thing: Also known as the Haili Church, this was founded in the 1820s by the first group of Christian missionaries to operate on the big island. The current structure, built in 1867, was designed in the Greek Revival style, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's located at 211 Haili Street, a little ways up the hill from the Bay.
The Hilo Hongwanji is a Buddhist temple and school. It puts me in mind of the photos of certain early 20th century buildings in Japan. It's at 398 Kilauea Avenue.
The statue is of Shinran Shonin (1173-1263 C.E.), the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
