    King David Kalakaua Park

by yooperprof Written Sep 1, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Public gathering place in central Hilo. When I was here, I saw a group of actors in rehearsal for "A Midsummers Night Dream". Local lore reports that King David Kalakaua (1836-1891) himself helped plant the trees which are grandly mature today. The park features a bronze statue of the namesake King, known as Hawaii's "Merrie Monarch." He's shown holding a symbolically important taro leaf and an ipu gourd.

    Bring your raingear

by KiKitC Updated Apr 19, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Did I mention before that Hilo is the wettest city in the US? Really, it does rain alot...on and off. So, expect to get wet. If you're planning a hike on this side of the island, bring and wear rain gear. If you're headed to Volcano, bring warmer rain gear.

Fondest memory: I remember taking a picture of it raining like cats and dogs from my lanai, and five minutes later taking the same picture with the sun shining.

    Frequent rainfall

by KiNyA Written Nov 9, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: One of the features os Hilo is the frequent rainfall, averaging 133 inches a year, that helps to produce lush waterfalls above Hilo. Water descending from the mountains irrigated the ancient Hawaiian taro cultivation systems. So essential was water to the well-being of a village that the word for wealth in Hawaiian is ""waiwai," meaning abdunant water.

    Green Hilo Fields

by KiNyA Written Nov 9, 2003

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I stayed in Kona on the west side of the Big Island and it was very nice to go to the east. Hilo area is one the most wet places in the world (at least I've been told that by locals) and everything I saw was *green*.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I took a lot of photos of the orchids and flowers. Especially when we visited the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens, but also of hibiscus and some of the other flowers whose names I don't know.

    *Green* Hilo

by KiNyA Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: If you are looking for a slice of Big Island life, find it in Hilo. It's the east side hub.
Being on the windward side, Hilo is blessed with showers that make everything lush.
