Traveling to Hawaii isn't hard at all but you will need cash to get here. I've met people who saved up for a very long time (years) just to come here for a few days. Paradise is quite expensive I'm affraid but if you budget right, you can swing some deals to get here. My suggestion is (especially if you're from Las Vegas) to check with local travel agencies on the West Coast or in Japan (if you're from there). You may very well find that travel here is much easier money wise than if you were to book it on your own. Many agencies offer package deals including car and hotel at affordable prices. A word to the wise however, as with many car rental agencies, there are clauses in the contract. Please take the rental insurance as many specialty vehicles (Convertables, SUVs, Off Roaders) are not covered by your own in the event you crash. For the US mainland travelers... Hawaii is not a foreign country (yeah I know, people come here thinking that!!). You will need your drivers liscense or else you're stuck walking around in town. In Hilo, everything you need for shopping, food, leisure, is located a few miles south of the airport. Theme: Airplane

Flight to Hilo by kyoub We arrived at Honolulu International Airport after an 8hr flight from Dallas/Fort Worth. After picking up our luggage at baggage claim we had to make our way to the other end of the airport. There we checked in at the inter island airport for our flight to the Big Island. We flew on Hawaiian Airlines, it was about a 30 minute flight. Leave a Comment

Aloha Airlines - 737 by Blatherwick Hilo International Airport is the main airport serving Hilo and the eastern coast of the Big Island. Currently, the only service available to Hilo Airport is interisland service from Hawaiian Airlines, Aloha Airlines, Island Air, or Pacific Wings. The passenger terminal complex, including commuter facilities, is at the southern edge of Hilo International Airport and is served by an access roadway from Kekuanaoa Avenue Hilo is a smaller sized town without public transportation. Most visitors chose to take a cab downtown and cover the bayfront and surrounding area on foot or they rent a car. Many local touring companies and taxi services will be happy to provide guided tours of Hilo and the surrounding areas. Car rental services are available at the Hilo International Airport. Port of Hilo Bay (Pride of Aloha ship) by triplehelix, 3 more photos Many travelers come here via cruiselines. You may want to try Norwegian Cruise Lines and ride over on the Pride of Aloha. There are other services available as Hilo's sea port is one of the busiest in the state. The phone number listed here is for US and Canadian travelers only. Click on the link for other numbers if you're from elsewhere.

Jeep by kyoub We always book a car online before we leave home. We check all the rental companies and go with the best offer. It is important to rent ahead of your arrival especially during the holidays, there are not enough vehicles to meet the demand We leased a car and had to take a jeep instead. They called it an upgrade but at the price of gas on the islands, we didn't really think it was an improvement. All rental offices are located outside the terminal. Leave a Comment

by Sweetberry1 You can fly into Hilo, if you are coming from another Island. Or fly into Kona, then hire a vehicle. ------- Two Airlines to choose from... 'Aloha Airlines' and 'Hawaiian Airlines'. A car or motorbike would be best, as in all the Hawaiian Islands. I was with a Tour Bus, and it was great, but I didn't get to see all that I would have liked to see. I really did enjoy this tour, it was very informative, and our driver, Alan, was a lot fun ;-) He even stopped for a second or two, if I wanted to get a picture of something ;-) Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

by Kodi01 Rent a car! As you can see this coffee plantation that we would have never seen if not for traveling around the island. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

by Hexepatty The Saddle Road. No doubt, one of my MOST favorite roads in my entire life, better than ANY road I've been on. Only thing that beats it is the Rock & Roll Rollercoaster at MGM in Orlando. Got it?! I bet it would be a BLAST on a motorcyle... With all those hills, you'd have to Lance Armstrong to do it on a Bike, but I bet someone COULD do it on a bike. No doubt some have! It's 41 miles of churning turns and hills, screams and chills, but Frank and I were TOTALLY down with it and enjoyed the ride! Sure we screamed here and there... especially when we hit the fog going into a tight turn that was on a steep incline very fast and you couldn't see in front of you... and you just prayed for no on-coming traffic... (Mary, if you are reading this. I'm just exagerating. Really. Truly.) Leave a Comment Theme: Motorcycle

You must fly if you are coming from anywhere off the island. Rental car is the best way to get around, or bicycle. There is the Hele-On Bus but I believe the schedule is limited. You can get from Hilo to other areas by bus - the station is on the ocean side of the main street downtown. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home
