There is a plethora of small eateries in Hilo town. Find Cafe 100 to try the original 'loco moco', consisting of a scoop of rice, a hamburger patty, one sunny side up egg, covered in gravy. It's usually served in a bowl. You can get endless varieties of this local dish, plus other local goodies.
Other good places to eat are Miwa's Restaurant(Japanese food), Nori's, Freddie's, Ken's Pancake House and Kuhio Grille. The choices are endless.
Favorite Dish: Loco Moco, with chicken instead of a hamburger patty.
I also love Japanese food, of which you can find plenty in this town.

This is a family owned restaurant located on the grounds of Waiakea Villas. The restaurant is upstairs and overlooks the ponds near Hilo Lagoon. Try to sit by a window if possible. Prices are very reasonable.
Favorite Dish: Everything I have ever had was good.

Buffet was $15, there were not many choices on the menu. Food was just ok. However, that being said the $15 was worth it to sit and have a view of the Kilauea Crater.

Excellent sushi, soups and other Asian dishes---low key and the prices are right!! Located just a few doors up from the Garden Exchange behind KTA and the weekend market. Just ask a local.

Cafe 100-Originally owned by my childhood neighbors, the Miyashiros, their daughters continue the tradition of 'plate lunch' and Loco Moco's. Truly a Big Island experience!
Favorite Dish: Classic Loco Moco
