I know what constitutes a tourist trap is open to interpretation, but anyplace that greets you with signs saying no littering, no camping, no alcohol, no animals, no fishing, diving or jumping and then warns that you enter a disinfected pool at your own risk because you might get a bacterial infection and that the fish and eels may become aggressive - well how much fun can that be???
Unique Suggestions: This is actually a naturally warm springs, mixing water from a warm underground spring with ocean water. The footing can be a bit dicey but if you really want a warm bath, give it a try. I would suggest wearing beach shoes or something to protect against the volcanic rock bottom.
Fun Alternatives: Visit one of the lovely botanical gardens on the island and then go back to your room for a nice soak or shower.

They promise low prices and show exciting volcano photos but good luck with both. The prices increase when you go to book and their flights don't go anywhere near the crater shown in their photos. Beware - these guys are immoral.
Unique Suggestions: Fly Blue Hawaiian. I've seen the photos and they actually deliver what they promise. Tropical Helicopters/Paradise Helicopters are out to rip tourists off - avoid at all costs!
Fun Alternatives: Volcano National Park. It is awesome esp. the hike out to the flowing lava. I don't know anywhere in the world where you can see Mother Nature's creation like this place. It is truly unique! And saves you $$$ and the fossil fuels and noise pollution caused by those noisy helicopters.

If you are thinking of using Tropical helicopter to see the lava or other parts of Hawaii think again.
They are over priced and have very little concern for the community the fly over.
There has been many complaints of them flying in cloudy weather that FHA rules
are against. This puts there passengers at risk of a head on crash with another
helicopter because they depend only on sigh to navigate. A much better choice
would be Blue HI to the islands by air.
Fun Alternatives: Blue Hi is a very well run company that both there passengers and the community are
respected.

This is not a great place to shop. Mostly cheap aloha shirts, muumuus and shell leis.
If you want to shop in Hilo Hatties, go to the one in Kona......much nicer.
