Huggo's had it all, a real good time to be had.... My friends (pictured) do a 'FANTASTIC' show every Friday night. This is a definite 'must see'! They (Hot Lava) are world class entertainers, and really get the place ROCKING...
They also perform individually, most other nights. This place gets pretty crowded Friday nights, people passing by, cannot resist, they have to drop in... ;-)
Very relaxed atmosphere, sit at the bar, or wonder around, dance, meet people, or whatever.....
Dress Code:
Casual, or 'knock their socks off' wear..... Jeans, shorts, whatever!!!
"On the Rocks" is the casual outdoor bar that is next to Huggo's - and it's part of the same business. Though they share a kitchen, it's more casual and youthful here - and the seating is less comfortable, too! You can get a burger and fries here, though you might have to be patient for your order to come. Service here is definitely "island"!
Huggo's has one thing going for it -- and one thing only: its commanding view of the bay and (unless one of those godawful, Titanic-size cruise ships is parked just off shore) of Kona's famous sunsets. Other than that, there is absolutely no reason to go here. The service is fairly dreadful when it's not just plain amateurish and clueless. The drinks are hugely overpriced the way all the drinks are overpriced along Ali'i Drive, with the difference that Huggo's significantly underpours. (I don't know why the liquor inspector hasn't yanked their license for failing to pour full shots.) We went on two nights, hoping for a decent sunset, and found the "Hawaiian" musicians on both nights to be just shy of pathetic. It's your basic tourist trap and they don't care whether you like it or not -- they know you're probably not going to be there long.
A great casual bar in the heart of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Definitely idolic of the 'beach' bar atmosphere and setting - this ocean-front cocktail bar and pub is an off-shoot of the Huggo's Restaurant next door. My one and only visit found it to be very friendly, hospitable, with great service and good bar staff. The patrons all looked happy and satisfied. The drinks served to us were good - though not as potent as I'm used to. They had a live band this saturday night, even though the town closes early on the entertainment front. But dancing and fun had by all. They don't really have an official "closing" hour - they are just open from 11:30 am until 'closing' - whatever that normally means - was quite early the saturday of August 8th, 2009. Generally they have entertainment nightly from 6:30 pm - 10 pm, and serve cocktails from 11:30 am until midnight. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.
Huggos... These guys were great entertainers... Once I became a 'Local' they would play 'Downunder' for me, as soon as I walked into the place... I thought that was a fantastic gesture...
