Bubba Gump Shrimp Company: Good location

Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory is a kitchsy chain of shrimp restaurants based on the movie Forrest Gump. While I generally think theme restaurants are lame, I've been surprisingly happy with Bubba Gump when I've eaten there. Mind you, this isn't 5 star fare, but tasty, basic southern inspired shrimp, seafood, ribs, etc. One of their best qualities is that they're always in great locations. The Kailua-Kona branch is no different - it sits right on the bay with great sunset views. Last time we were in Kona, our 16 month old needed something to eat, so we popped in (its a great place to eat with kids). Lucky for us it was whale season (March) and for an hour and a half we watched whales breaching on the horizon. An overall great experience.

Favorite Dish: Bucket of peel and eat shrimp.

  • Bubba Gumps: Good for the kids

My wife and I ate here the first time we were in Kona and were surprisingly impressed. We came again with the kids in 6/07 and they had a great time. Service is pretty fast, food is good. Be careful with the "Bucket of Boat Trash" though; my wife thought everything but the shrimp was a bit "dirty/ fishy" tasting, but loved the shrimp. I got the same and thought the fish tasted a bit old, but I've had it before and it was great. It's a fun place though. One tip, either go late or do call ahead seating before you leave your place. Waiting one hour with the kids....well you know. We went around 8:30pm this time cause we were coming back from the volcano and had no problem getting the prime seats out overlooking the ocean. If you go at 5-7, expect a wait.

Bubba Gumps: Right on the ocean

by Sublimity Updated Aug 28, 2006

Awesome for breakfast. Although we eat here several times during our viists, we make a piont to be here for breakfast the morning we leave. We get one last chance to savor the beauty of the ocean of the beautiful Hawaiian islands.

Name was inspired by the movie Forrest Gump. It's a chain restaurant located in 9 states. Three restaurants are in the Hawaiian islands.

Food is good, atmosphere is casual & lively, views are fantastic! We overlooked the ocean with numerous boats and surfers.

Menu includes specialty drinks, appetizers, an assortment of "shirmp" dishes, salads, sandwiches, seafood, chicken, burgers, children's menu.

Bubba Gumps was a fun place to go.
There are liscense plates on the tables. One says, 'Stop Forest, Stop' , the other says, 'Run Forest, Run'. When you need service, put up the Stop sign and someone is there almost immediately.

    Favorite Dish: Shrimp!
