Hapuna beach - about 1 hour north of Kailua-Kona is very easy to get to (no 4X4 at all) - turn off left just off the Queen K highway and would be a highlight on any trip to Big Island, since white sand beaches are not so common. There are lifeguards there, ala Bay Watch - Hasselhoff, not Anderson- and the waves are fantastic for boogie boarding. Bathroom, a snackbar, and showers, lots of room, make this beach a beautiful place to visit. bring a cooler with a picnic lunch and you are set:) Hapuna Prince Beach Hotel is nearby for Luxury travelers, it looks beautiful!
This was such a pretty beach. Bring your snorkelling gear as there is a coral reef out there at the south end. We saw a turtle that swam right near us, about 40-ft from shore and then my husband saw an eel and an octopus over by the coral reefs.
Just watch out for the waves as they can mess you up pretty good.
