My wife and I arrived in Kona via the Celebrity Century. This was a 15 night cruise that hit several ports, one of them being Kona. This was a different way of visiting Hawaii than I was accustomed to and I thouroughly enjoyed it.
We arrived in Kona via cruise ship and had to tender to port. Tendering can be a long process and depending on the seas; quite bumpy as well. We were fortunate to have smooth seas and a very short ride to and from the pier.
The southern end of the island is constantly in danger of being 'flooded' by lava.An eruption cut off this street. You can approach it by car from the Crater Rim road.
There is a track that goes along the shore from Kailua Kona up to the north. You can use the trolley bus to sightsee this track. Which is nice to do so.
