Umauma is only a mile away from Nanue and offers the same spectacular view with the addition of Mauna Kea. Umauma is perhaps most famous for its botanical gardens.

looks like a scull face huh?

The best way to view this area is on a bike. Sure you can park on the side of the road and get out but its a better experience when you're biking. I met this group of old ladies who were doing a cross island bike ride. I was just amazed to see those aged women taking a couple of days to bike across the island. They asked for directions to the nearest restroom to which I relayed, "A mile and a half away at Waikaumalo Park". They nodded and went on their way after getting a few pictures.

Beyond the park area there is a hiking trail which I will go on sometime soon. Here are a few scenes you will see along the way.

This place isn't hard to get to but you will have to pay attention to the not so visible sign on the highway to Hilo. You'll probably notice it after you pass it! It's ok, take your next right up the hill and make another right after that. Keep driving a little ways and you'll find the park.

Though unlikely here, it can happen. Lock your cars up when you park them otherwise you may be missing your loose change or even your car.

Common sense will tell you not to lean too far over the white bridge. This is the last thing you'll ever see if you do...

Take this for what its worth folks. I've been told they put this sign up there to deter people from soiling the river. Still, it would be wise to heed the warning just in case. Also, no animals are allowed at the park.

Possible health hazard? or scare tactic?
