 | Pahoa Flights and Airline Tips | Tips 1 - 4 of 4 | | The best way to get to and around Pahoa is by having your own wheels. You can get a car at the airport upon your arrival. We had made reservations for a small car, mainly because gas is higher on the islands. When we went to pick it up they said they had no cars left on the lot. Finally they gave us an upgrade of a jeep. Upgrade? I don't think so but we took it. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Lava engulfed the ohia forest in this area, moisture from the trees caused the molten rock to harden around the trunks. As the trees rotted away, a hollow shell of lava rock remained thus the "lava trees". This is a very strange looking forest now but worth a stop. Take the 1-hour nature loop through the Lava Tree State Park but do not stray off the path. Leave a Comment

As you leave Pahoa the road leads into a tunnel of tall albezia trees covered in philodendron vines. It is very scenic in the daytime. At dusk if you drive by you will almost be deafened by the sound of tree frogs. Music to some ears not to others. I understand the locals are complaining but I enjoyed hearing them. Leave a Comment
