Pahoa Things to Do

  • Scenic drive

As you leave Pahoa the road leads into a tunnel of tall albezia trees covered in philodendron vines. It is very scenic in the daytime. At dusk if you drive by you will almost be deafened by the sound of tree frogs. Music to some ears not to others.I understand the locals are complaining but I enjoyed hearing them.

  • Lava trees

Lava engulfed the ohia forest in this area, moisture from the trees caused the molten rock to harden around the trunks. As the trees rotted away, a hollow shell of lava rock remained thus the "lava trees". This is a very strange looking forest now but worth a stop. Take the 1-hour nature loop through the Lava Tree State Park but do not stray off...

  • Great Italian

A small intimate restaurant with great Italian food. The restaurant is an old house on the main street of Pahoa. The food is local and fresh, the staff are very friendly and the chef is Italian. They do not have a liqor license, but that's not a problem, you simply buy your favourite wine at the local grocery store and show up at the...

Not a day passed on our first trip to the Big Island that we didn't stop by Papa's. He served the best food on the island. Pahoa Transportation

  • Book ahead

The best way to get to and around Pahoa is by having your own wheels. You can get a car at the airport upon your arrival. We had made reservations for a small car, mainly because gas is higher on the islands. When we went to pick it up they said they had no cars left on the lot. Finally they gave us an upgrade of a jeep. Upgrade? I don't think so but...

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Pahoa is said to be the anthurium capital of the world. There are many nurseries in the area so watch for the signs.
You can also buy Noni and Kava, both are medicinal plants, grown on the island.

Pahoa Off The Beaten Path

  • Tidepools

Kapoho Tidepools,a network of interconnecting tidepools stretching out to a protective reef. The thermal hot pond is ocean fed yet it consists of 80% fresh water, and the pond temperatures average around 89 degrees. Grab your snorkel gear, snorkeling is first rate. The property owners do discourage outside vistors though.
