Brown's Beach House at the Fairmont Orchid: Great seafood in a beautiful setting
Brown's is a fantastic option for that romantic or special occasion dinner. The restaurant is located on the grounds of the Fairmont Orchid Hotel. The open air restaurant sits on a lawn that overlooks the hotel's lagoon. Feeling the breeze while listening to Nino (a Hawaiian super-sized local musician... see picture) and watching the sun set over the lagoon is truly a special experience. To top it off, the food is amazing and the wine list is great.
The restaurant is committed to sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. From the restaurant's website:
"Hawaii’s regulations far surpass any other region’s requirements in the world for sustainable seafood. Our Long Line Fleet, utilizing techniques designed to preserve the Islands’ underwater
habitats, sets the standard for the rest of the world to follow.
Fairmont Hotel’s and Resorts has made a comprehensive, company-wide commitment to the environment and to sourcing local, organic and sustainable items wherever possible. As such,
we are committed to offering sustainable seafood choices on our menus.
Brown’s Beach House proudly serves 100% sustainable fresh fish, caught solely in the State of
Hawaii’s waters, under the strict guidelines of the NOAA and the Pacific Regional Division. "

The Bar in Mauna Lani Hotel: Good Food, Not So Great Hotel
Really Good Restaurant, just not so good of a hotel. The Mauna Lani Hotel is starting to show it's age, but compared to the much better (accomadation wise Fairmont Orchid), the food at the Bar here is great. You will most likely be the only one there, but Gill the Bartender seems to be able to offer up some good suggestions. Believe it or not, the Bar Food in this place is better than their other Restaurants like the Canoe House, etc. They need to bring the Chef over from there to the other places. They have great Sushi on certain nights, but otherwise, the menu as a whole is good. Don't get freaked out by the lack of clientale in this place, just enjoy some solitude and good food, you won't be dissapointed.
On a side note, the staff at this bar happen to be some of the most pleasant and helpful that I have come accross. You get this at the Fairmont, but they seem a little more Service Trained Responses than what you get at this place. True Vibe is always Cool in Hawaii!
Favorite Dish: The New York Strip with Mushrooms and Onions. Sounds Basic, but it will beat out all of the other more pricy places and anyone that likes a good steak will be happy.
Tommy Bahamas: Don't Miss the 3 Days of Sickness!
In about 30 or so destinations worldwide that I have visited, this place has to be the worst that I have been to. I have been to the Tommy B in Naples, Sarasota Florida, Scottsdale AZ and have nothing but great experiences! Great Food, Good Atmosphere, So on, but what the Hell happened here? True this place has only been open for about 1 month, but I they have some of the worst service, poor food quality that you will experience while on the Big Island. Stay Clear!
Favorite Dish: The Crab Bisque was good until I couldn't move for 3 days!
