The road comes to an abrupt end at a lava flow that destroyed much of Kalapana village in 1989. This church, they managed to get out of the way of the lava and transport it to a safer ground.

This was one of the roads which had been closed off by flowing lava. It was completely blocked off. There were caution signs up for the fumes that were still being emitted.

As we drove around the coastline, this was the amazing view we saw of the lava pouring into the sea from the underground tubes. The island is slowly growing in size because of it.

The Pololu Valley Lookout is found at the end of Hwy 270. There is an excellent view of the rugged Kohala Mountains and along the coastline... Better in nicer weather of course.

Kamoamoa Camp Grounds area, this section of the road was wiped out by the January 1990 lava flows. In November 1992 new vents caused further lava flows to close another mile of this road.

I can't begin to tell you the actual dimensions of this area with the caldera, and the opening of the caldera itself. Suffice it to say, it is so much larger than it looks in this picture.

From the Volcano House/Park Headquarter area, the Chain of Craters road takes you eventually down to the sea where you can observe lava flowing, slowly building the Big Island bigger.
