Waimea Things to Do

Just outside of town on the road towards the coast there is a spot where all the three big mountains of Hawaii (left to right) - Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Haulalai are visible, provided the weather cooperates.

Drive on Road 19 about 20 miles to Kohala Coast and visit Hapuna Beach State Park. It's one of the nicest beaches on the Island. Hapuna has beautiful white sand a clean sandy bottom, and great surf & boogieboarding. Visit the snack bar and get yourslef a giant hamburger.

Waimea Restaurants

  • Fine dining in Cattle Country

When I was on the Big Island in 2005, my friends had their wedding rehearsal dinner here. We didn't get a chance to order off the menu, but looking around I could tell that this would be an excellent choice if you're looking for fine dining while on the northern side of the Big Island. This is an owner operated restaurant, and the chef prefers to...

  • Big Braddah's Take Out

Though right down the street from Jo Jo's Shave Ice (which is known for having like a million-billion flavors), Big Braddah's shave ice was much better. They didn't pack it and it didn't melt. Shave ice- what's a trip to Hawaii without shave ice?

We rented a car, it takes 45 minutes to drive around the island.

Gotta go on a helicopter ride to see that spectacular falls and mountains. This was my first helicopter ride and I loved it. VERY EXPENSIVE tho!

You have to get lei'd while in Hawaii.

Even my dog got lei'd. Ok, to be serious you can not take dogs with you from the mainland unless you are staying a long time because they quarantine them.

DO not touch the endangered animals of there are hefty fines.

Here is a picture of windsurfing, but read the warning signs posted at the beaches for conditions.

Waimea What to Pack

  • Packing List

Average daily temperature: 82 degrees. Water temperature: 79 degrees. Most of the year, Waimea Bay can claim the longest surf break in the world. But in July, it's perfect for those whose favorite water sport is floating, with a sandy, gently sloping bottom that trumps the North Shore's other, gravelly beaches.

Hike one of the trails down to the coast. Somebody in our group has the ingenious idea to hike down this trail. Not a problem going DOWN, but there's only one way back UP and its not by escalator or donkey. If you're going to do this, bring plenty of water, sunscreen and wear decent shoes.

I LOVE cactuses. Wherever you look around, you see a lot of them. They are grown in this area because it's much more drier than Hilo, which is very green.

It has to be the traditional hula dance. They have luaus at most major hotels, quite the tourist trap, but you have to see one and watch because their culture is very different than what I am used to. This is my favorite island, which has many waterfalls. I bought a book that was wrote by the locals, we hiked to the waterfall where 'Fantasy Island...
