The Dying Sugar Economy

by AKtravelers

Kaua'i used to be an island dominated by sugar plantations and company towns for sugar mills. Unfortunately, globalization has resulted in Hawaiian sugar being priced out of the market due to high labor and other costs (Hawaii is an expensive place to do business). Therefore, only two of the nine sugar mills are still operating on Kaua'i, which means many of the small towns have had to come up with other sources of economic sustenance. Luckily, increased tourism has helped Waimea and Hanapepe, among others, continue to prosper, but the loss of agricultural jobs is one of the reason that thousands of Hawaii natives move to the mainland every year.

The Wild Fowl of Kaua'i

by AKtravelers

You won't be on the ground long in Kaua'i before you notice an abundance of feral roosters, hens and chicks loitering on the roadsides and gathering in parks. If you happen to miss them because you arrived at night, rest assured you'll know there are lots of roosters on Kaua'i sometime before sunrise. They are everywhere! The locals seem to be of two minds as to why there are so many farm birds running wild on Kaua'i. The first theory has to do with hurricane Iniki, which ravaged the island in 1993 and set free lots of the local livestock. The other theory is that they have always been around, but that the local people gradually stopped making the effort to catch and eat them as prosperity increased in the late 20th century and it became much easier to get the headless, pre-plucked, meatier varieties in the local grocery store. What both these theories have in common is that Kaua'i is...

Coffee Grows Here!!

by AKtravelers

Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. in which coffee grows (reason enough alone to move there) and there are several coffee plantations on Kauai. Most Hawaiian coffee is known as Kona, and it is a mild blend. If you like the strong body of European coffee or Starbuck's more bold blends, you might find Kona a bit light for your taste.

I wahi kope nau? Will you have some coffee?

by keida84

My favorite thing about Kaua'i is the coffee or "kope" that is grown there. Everytime we travel to the islands we always return with a boatload of coffee. Kaua'i coffee is "ono" which means delicious.Koloa, Kaua'i is the largest coffee growing region in the United States, with over 4,000 acres of rich volcanic soil that once grew sugar cane . Coffee has been grown on Kaua'i since 1836 which makes it the oldest growing region of the Hawai'ian Islands. With the perfect growing conditions of soil, rainfall and sunshine it is no wonder that Kaua'i grows some of the best coffee in the world.Kaua'i Kope (coffee) is the best as far as my taste buds are concerned so relax and don't "wiki wiki" hurry grab a cup of hot or iced coffee and watch the world go by.

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook

by 2rs

You may have seen other people recomending The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook from Wizard Publishing, and I must join the gang of satsified owners of this book.It gives lots of good tips on what to see and do as well as history and details of places.Their maps are really good and usefull. The only thing i kind of dislike is their accomodation listings as I think it focuses to much on condos and resorts, but that's really not why you need a guidebook.Don't leave your room without it.

Free Maps and Ideas

by BlueCollar

You can find this magazine in bins located throughout the Lihu`e Airport. They're free so be sure to get one. It provides good maps of the island's cities as well as good ideas to keep you busy during your stay. Admittedly, some of the things listed seem a little hokey, but overall, it's a good item to have on-hand.If you want to get one before you arrive, you can order them from their website. This will cost you a few dollars, however.Return to my Kaua`i page.Return to my main Hawai`i page.

Polihale State Park

The beauty of nature is my favorite thing about this paradise. Rent a car and drive one end to the other taking all of the side roads and passages you can find - one twist in the road and you are looking at a picturesque beach and a twist to the other side and majestic mountains. I had the pleasure and opportunity to attend the most beautiful wedding I have ever witnessed on the beach at sunset. It was magical for all who attended.

Hyatt Regency Kauai versus Princeville Hotel

by AliasGirl

Funny thing is everyone (okay not E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E) but alot of travelers who are planning a trip to Kauai debate whether they should stay in the Southern part of Kauai at Hyatt Regency or Northern part of Kauai at Princeville. Its amazing how many people I have come across, who have been in this predicament! You can tell that I stayed/choose Hyatt but we did visit (I know everyone does that too-thanks to Fodors/Frommers.."..don't miss lunch at Princeville if you don't stay there.."). On the day we visited it was rainy, gray and very dark. Princeville was a beautiful Hotel and I'm sure it would have been a pleasant stay however, we much preferred the look and feel of Hyatt Regency. Just my two cents!
