Lihue Shopping Center: Where to Find Just About Everything
Across the street from the Costco in Lihue is the largest shopping center on the island. Here you will find a Long’s Drug Store, a large grocery store, a Macy’s (department store), a bank as well as many other retailers and small restaurants. This is a great place to stock up on anything you might need while you’re on the island, especially if you’re going to have access to a kitchen. And, as I mentioned, if you’re a Costco member there is a Costco directly across the street. This shopping center is the best place to grab the bulk of your groceries.
What to buy: Groceries, toiletries, clothing, electronics, etc.
Costco: Saving a Dime
If you are staying in a vacation rental and are planning to cook some of your own meals, or just need to pick up some snacks and toiletries it’s easy to do your bulk grocery shopping in Lihue, right after you land, before you venture on to your final destination city on the island. No matter what city you are staying in on Kauai you will be able to find a small grocery store but to save a few extra bucks you can do your major shopping in Lihue at the Costco shopping center. Costco is a members-only bulk, wholesale retailer so the portions are large, but it saves you money in the long run. If you are not a member you can buy a year-long membership for $35 US. Also know that they do not accept credit cards (except a Costco Amex) so you will need to come armed with cash, your checkbook or a debit card to pay.
What to buy: Bulk groceries, sundries, snacks, electronics, etc.
What to pay: This is the best place to get a deal on just about anything, but you need to be a member and many of the items are in bulk.

Shops at Kilohana Plantation: Small set of discerning shops
There are only a few shops at the Kilohana Planation but the merchandise they carry is of high quality and reflect the talents of many contemporary Hawaiian artists. Our favorite store is The Country Store, with a selection of jewelery, ceramics, glassware, wood objects, and other items. Keoni, the owner, is happy to give you the history on any piece in his shop and tidbits about the artist. We purchased a beautiful Norfolk Pine goblet and admired many of the jewelery items. We also purchsed a piece of original art by Oahu artist Cindy Conklin.
What to buy: Art, crafts, clothing
What to pay: Varies
Yongs Aloha Fashions: "cheap" clothes
This was one of the less expensive places that we found to buy some Hawaiian print clothing. We bought mostly childrens clothes and they had a huge selection. Also many shirts, board shorts, dresses, and accessories.
What to pay: ummm...it's still overpriced, but slightly less so than the norm around Kauai. We bought a dress for a baby girl for $16.99.
