Sunset Salt Pond Beach

There really isn't any "nightlife" on the island of Kauai. Nature is what it is all about here.

The best nightlife? Walk along the beach, go see a Luau, or better yet watch the sunset with someone you love. On our last night in Kauai we drove to Salt Pond Beach to watch the sunset. BEAUTIFUL!

Don't turn at the sign that says "Salt Pond Beach" rather go straight to the end of the road for the best view!

Preparing the pork Hawaiian Style

Kauai Luau's are a must do nightlife activity. Actually, the dinner itself will typically start before sunset, when the buried pig roast is unearthed and dedicated by traditional Hawaiian methods. The food is typically served buffet style, while waiters will bring bar drinks upon request. The food is oriented to the palate of the average tourist, so don't expect anything really exotic, but it's all good freshly cooked and prepared food. It's important to find a table or place on the long table near the stage for a good view of the nightly presentation. These productions are quite elaborate, and include bringing guests on stage. Fire ceremonies and other acrobatic drama are part of the nightlife Hawaiian Luau theater. For a list of Luau's available in Kauai, see the weblink below. Substantial discounts can be gained by your hotel or some kind of tour package coupon. Families are welcome to these events.

Dress Code: This is the time to come decked out in the traditional flowered Hawaiian shirt for men, and exotic tropical colored dress for ladies. Otherwise, dress informally.

Grand Hyatt Luau: Nightlife? What nightlife? Do a luau!!!

The Grand Hyatt Luau is an event worthy of checking out. They have luaus on Thursdays and Sundays from 5:30p - 8:15p. I thoroughly checked out all luau options on Kaua'i and determined they are all about the same price. That being said, the one at the Grand Hyatt is superior. Plus, you don't have elbow-to-elbow problems like the one on the Coconut Coast.

There is SOME nightlife on Kauai. But, if night-life is something you look for on vacation then I would suggest you visit the other islands instead.

Most of us are in bed by 9:00pm. THAT is what I call "Night-life".... :-)

Stargazing

One evening I was strolling in the Coconut Marketplace shopping mall, when I came across a guy with a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope set up to show the night sky to the mall visitors. Being a stargazer myself, I naturally got into talking to him; he told me that there would be a stargazing gathering later that evening in a softball field outside the town of Kaumakani, and invited me to join in.

Hawaiian islands are a great place for stargazing, with the summit of Mauna Kea being the mecca of professional astronomy in the world. Kauai, too, features beautiful night sky, being mostly rural and thus away from light pollution. Kauai Educational Association for Science & Astronomy (KEASA) organizes monthly stargazing sessions at Kaumakani and at Waimea Plantation Cottages. They are very welcoming of visitors and the members can show us high northerners the beauty of the tropical night sky. Check KEASA's web site (below) for the dates.

Dress Code: It could get chilly at night; a light sweater won't hurt.

Meet new friends!

Not much to do for night life in Kauai as the sidewalks roll up around sunset. But at the resorts the tourists have other ideas! The Radisson Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue have happy hour from 5 -6 pm with free mai tais, beer or wine for the hotel guests at the pool bar. You can meet wonderful people from around the world and watch the sunset and torch lighting ceremony. One night we even saw whales breaching on the ocean.

A great little bar, pub atmosphere with excellant nachos and wonderful drinks. During the several days I spent in Kapaa I met some wonderful people here, who I later went hiking on the beach with and to a wonderful, all day music festival. Ask the bartender for his secret "Punani" drink, so good you'll have too many!

This is Me after the Luau

I don't remember specifics but I thought I should clarify that I do remember seeing some comedy clubs and other places to hear live music advertised in Kauai travel guides.

These weren't located on our property. If you want to venture away from your hotel, check with local listings for more details. With all the sun and fun we had during the day, we were too tired to leave the Hyatt Regency Hotel Property except for dinner. On the days that we were too tired to leave the property we were thrilled to have such nice choices for dinner right here.

Stevenson's Library at the Hyatt Regency Hotel: A Place to stop for Nightlife

Hubby Enjoying his Cigar

Stevenson's Library is a dark wood paneled retreat. A nice place to have a drink, talk to other hotel guests and hear some good music.

This lounging spot was always lively at night during our stay, we would came by for an after dinner drink and cigar, see other tip in Nightlife.

Its a good bar with single-malt scotch, vintage ports and cognacs and fine cigars says the hotel guidebook. There are games and a pool table. Live jazz bands frequented every night.

Me & My Cigar

Well, since we were there on our honeymoon this wasn't such a problem!

We still looked for some fun evening events?! Well, we always dine late, not rushing the afternoon and taking our time to get ready for dinner enjoy the room etc. After dinner we passed by Stevenson Library for live jazz music/tropical hawaiian band etc or whatever they had going on and enjoy a nice cigar (yes both of us).

A tip: check with concierge once you arrive and schedule your dinner reservations. We left the property various times to enjoy dinner and a live show at other local hotels/restaurants.

Dinner, live music and nightcaps. That's probably as lively as you get here in Kauai.
