The Ultimate Kauai Guide
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed was the most thorough guide book I have ever read! The authors listed everything down to the mile marker. They visited every spot on this island and wrote about it, no matter how remote. My copy has been highlighted and dogeared! So much to see I must go back again. They also have a web page that you can use when you purchase the book to view additional information such as hotel reviews and photo's. They reviewed restaurants all over the island and marked the ones they recommend with an ONO logo. What was really helpful is they also list the prices of each restaurant so we were able to stay in our budget and eat well. During our stay at one of the hotels that they listed as a GEM, we met another couple who was using this book as well. They stayed for two weeks so had a chance to check out hiking trails and hidden beachs that were listed in the guide.

I always bring an extra duffle bag filled with items that I bring with me to use while on the island. This includes sunscreen, underwater cameras, laundry detergent and other food items that are expensive to buy on the island. Then when you are ready to leave for home you will have an extra bag to off load dirty clothes or use the bag to carry your souveniers.

Hawai'i is very casual and nice restaurants do not require a suit or tie for men, but resort wear (Hawai'ian shirts and nice slacks) are generally accepted. Women can wear a sundress or nice slacks and Hawai'ian shirt as well, beach wear or thongs (flip flops) are not good choices. Overall you will need a bathing suit and some type of cover up. Did you know that the makers of Rit Dye now has a sunscreen formula to wash into your clothes? There are clothes which are already manufactured and are available through "Travel Smiths and Magellean" travel companies. These garments really do work and provide a modicum of sun protection which is needed in the tropics. Water shoes also prove to be valuable as they allow the wearer to walk in the water as well as on land. Rinse them out well when you are through with them and then air dry. This helps them stay fresh and clean.

Make sure you pack some good sunscreen or suncream with a high SPF and a waterproof formula. Aloe vera gel is great for skin conditioning for after exposure to the sun. I would also recommend a good triple anti-biotic cream for minor scrapes and cuts.

Take your camera and extra film or media cards as you will take a lot of photos while on the island. Bring extra batteries and a charging cord. You can actually find places on the island to download your photos to CD while you are there.

I like to bring my own dry snorkel and prescription mask for snorkeling, I don't bring my fins as they are so cheap to rent while I am there on the island.

    Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • You don't need to take too many clothes with you, mainly shorts and t.shirts and maybe a couple of tidy outfits if you eat out. You don't want to end up with a heavy lable on your cases like I had. Plenty of sun screen and always try to have some drinking water with you.

A good camera and plenty of film there are so many beautiful things to take pictures of. Usually magnificent waterfalls.

    Cotton
  • Tip Rating:
  • Avoid taking any clothing made from cotton. If your gear should get wet or if you do any laundry, it takes forever to dry. Try to take clothing made from synthetic material like nylon, polyester, capilene or cool max. They are cooler, lighter and dry a lot faster.

    Water Purifer
  • Tip Rating:
  • Camping

Prevent dehydration and heat stroke.Speaking from experience, you can never carry enough safe drinking water along the Kalalau trail.Sooner or later you will run out of safe drinking water. The heat, humidity and physical exertion will take it's toll on your body.Have used and recommend the following: 1)Sweetwater Guardian purification system with viralstop. $69.00 2)Portable Aqua and P.A. Plus-iodine tablets. $5.00 I would recommend a water purifer over iodine tablets. The water taste better and less side effects from iodine intake.Big cost factor difference.

WATER PURIFIER....OR...... IODINE TABLETS........ VERY,VERY, VERY IMPORTANT !

Leptospirosis - virus - in untreated drinking water is very nasty and is something you do not want to get on your vacation. The 3 only ways to safely eliminate the virus and make mountain stream water safe to drink are: 1) boil water for 10 minutes, 2) use a water purifer which uses either chlorine or iodine, or 3)use iodine tablets. NOTE: WATER FILTERS DO NOT ELIMINATE LEPTOSPIRSIS.

    Equipment
  • Tip Rating:
  • Back pack: 2500-2900 cu.inch capacity or smaller. Pack as LITE as possible.

Good pair hiking boots. Clothing should be lite and thin for easy wash and drying. Not much clothing is needed at the end of the trail.Trust me.... 95% of the people who make it to the end of the trail are naked....it must be the strong and uncontrollable urge to reconnect with nature or the Adam and Eve Syndrome of being in paradise. Temp. rarely drops below 60 F. (sleeping bag not necessary)

    Basic first aid kit.

Small compact camera with built in zoom lens, wide angle lens and flash.(Saves on weight and space.) Extra film. ASA 400 Keep all film and camera in a waterproof bag. Zip Lock

Camping permits for different camp sites; lite wt. tent, food, stove, fuel, pot, flash light, water purifer, freeze dried food. (Japanese ramen noodles were great) Avoid taking any canned or glass food items.Thats extra weight and you have to pack the empty containers out.

walking stick-(firm branch or stick will do) invaluable when crossing streams, slippery muddy parts of the trail, and loose volcanic soil. Helps to maintain balance and reduce stress on your back and knees.

    Mosquito Repellent or Blood Lettings!
  • Tip Rating:
  • We always pack a suitcase inside a suitcase so we can have extra space to bring home souveniers, coffee, and mac nuts!

Casual and comfy clothes a must! Swim suits if you plan on swimming or sunbathing. Reef shoes if you plan on snorkeling or hiking in wet areas. A jacket or sweatshirt comes in handy for cool evening walks! A nice hat to keep the sun off your head and help keep it out of your eyes. And last but not least, sunglasses.

Suncreen is a must. The sun can be rough on you. Mosquito repellent is also a must if you want to avoid a blood letting!

Definately bring a camera, there is so much you will want to capture! Plenty of film if your camera requires it and extra batteries! If you have a digital camera, make sure you have a nice sized memory card or stick because you will take so many pictures here!

Ladies, plan to wear your hair in a ponytail!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Even though we did not experience extreme humidity, it is much more humid than it is in California. I usually wear my hair straight by using lots of hair products and a straight iron. Well, this was pointless since my hair would frizz out in this climate. So, I wore my hair in a French braid or ponytail most of the time. Swimming in the ocean each day was another reason not to fix my hair each day.

    The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook
  • Tip Rating:
  • I've read and studied scores - perhaps hundreds - of guidebooks to various places I have visited over the years, and never have I found one as enjoyable or useful as The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. We bought our copy, the 5th edition, at a bookstore in Cincinnati before leaving on our trip. If you can't find it in your local bookstore, it can be ordered online or picked up at many places throughout the island after you arrive. Written by Kauai residents, Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman, the book is locally published by Wizard Publications, Inc. in Lihue. This ultimate guide tells of so many places neglected by other guide books that it would take months to explore them all. There's lots of practical detail, the kind of stuff you could only get from a savvy local with a sense of adventure The book is written in a very engaging style and is often humorous. I wouldn't think of returning to Kauai without it.
