Ladies, plan to wear your hair in a ponytail!

by GracesTrips

Even though we did not experience extreme humidity, it is much more humid than it is in California. I usually wear my hair straight by using lots of hair products and a straight iron. Well, this was pointless since my hair would frizz out in this climate. So, I wore my hair in a French braid or ponytail most of the time. Swimming in the ocean each day was another reason not to fix my hair each day.

Mosquito Repellent or Suffer (for real)

by girladventure

Don't forget your daypack/hydration pack if you plan on hiking. Warm weather clothing. Kauai is so laid back and casual. Daily attire will consist of swimwear, shorts and tanks. For shoes, I highly recommend you bring KEEN sandals. Great for both men and women. It gives you ample ventilation and great for adventures in and out of water. We hiked on those for 6 hours. You can get them from any adventure stores such as REI. Maybe a really light rain/wind proof jacket would be handy. Although even when it rains there it's still warm. Take a wide brim hat! MOSQUITO REPELLENT IS A MUST! If you plan on going hiking (even for short hikes) you will definitely need it. They are everywhere waiting for your sweet blood. If you plan on going to Kipu Falls beware!! When we went there a group of family came out with a 100 bites each (ok I'm exaggerating). They are practically covered with bites....

The Ultimate Kauai Guide

by pamstravels

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed was the most thorough guide book I have ever read! The authors listed everything down to the mile marker. They visited every spot on this island and wrote about it, no matter how remote. My copy has been highlighted and dogeared! So much to see I must go back again. They also have a web page that you can use when you purchase the book to view additional information such as hotel reviews and photo's.They reviewed restaurants all over the island and marked the ones they recommend with an ONO logo. What was really helpful is they also list the prices of each restaurant so we were able to stay in our budget and eat well.During our stay at one of the hotels that they listed as a GEM, we met another couple who was using this book as well. They stayed for two weeks so had a chance to check out hiking trails and hidden beachs that were listed in the...

Best Book!
Sunscreen, underwater cameras, & Hawaiian clothes!

by GlobalMatt

I highly recommend getting Hawaiian print-type shirts & similar dress for the ladies. This isn't just a tourist thing...the locals really do wear this type of clothing all the time! So, get decked out and hang 10 in Kaua'i!!! Bring lots of sunscreen or you'll end up with a scorching sunburn. Hawaii is just south of the Tropic of Cancer and you WILL get burned if you don't put some on...especially in the summer months. Underwater cameras are an absolute must BEFORE you leave for Kaua'i....unless you want to pay the premium prices for them while you're on the island. There are endless diving, snorkeling, & swimming possibilities on Kaua'i.

Wear your Hawaiian stuff!!

Island "Survival" Kit

by keida84

I always bring an extra duffle bag filled with items that I bring with me to use while on the island. This includes sunscreen, underwater cameras, laundry detergent and other food items that are expensive to buy on the island. Then when you are ready to leave for home you will have an extra bag to off load dirty clothes or use the bag to carry your souveniers. Hawai'i is very casual and nice restaurants do not require a suit or tie for men, but resort wear (Hawai'ian shirts and nice slacks) are generally accepted. Women can wear a sundress or nice slacks and Hawai'ian shirt as well, beach wear or thongs (flip flops) are not good choices.Overall you will need a bathing suit and some type of cover up. Did you know that the makers of Rit Dye now has a sunscreen formula to wash into your clothes? There are clothes which are already manufactured and are available through "Travel Smiths and...

Resort wear: bathing suits, sarongs, shorts, tank tops, capris, sandals, and something nice for a night out.Hiking: good shoes (it can get muddy), a light windbreaker and/or light rain jacket. Sunscreen and lots of it. Bring your camera and lots of film or disk space. Snorkel gear although you can rent or buy on the islandWater shoes/Tabis. I know they are kind of dorky but if you are going snorkeling you'll wish you had them.

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook

by Stephen-KarenConn

I've read and studied scores - perhaps hundreds - of guidebooks to various places I have visited over the years, and never have I found one as enjoyable or useful as The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. We bought our copy, the 5th edition, at a bookstore in Cincinnati before leaving on our trip. If you can't find it in your local bookstore, it can be ordered online or picked up at many places throughout the island after you arrive. Written by Kauai residents, Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman, the book is locally published by Wizard Publications, Inc. in Lihue. This ultimate guide tells of so many places neglected by other guide books that it would take months to explore them all. There's lots of practical detail, the kind of stuff you could only get from a savvy local with a sense of adventure The book is written in a very engaging style and is often humorous. I wouldn't think of...

The Untimate Kauai Guidebook
In order to not make a complete spectacle

Pack the very least possible. Bring ALL the swimwear you own and consider those your daily UNDER-wear (for easy removal of OVER-wear when coming across beaches). SOCKS: Socks are a very big NEON SIGN pointing right at you that says; "TOURIST HERE!!!! TOURIST HERE!!!" --- maybe just bring 1 or 2 pairs of socks in case you realllllly think you need them (i can't imagine what for...)There is little/no need for dresswear unless you really just want to get gussied up for some special occasion. Otherwise, there's been only one place thus far that has turned me away with regards to my attire: And.... **drum roll** That was BORDER'S BOOKS. Yes!! Border's Books kicked me out for not having shoes on. Bring them all - but KEEP THEM SAFE. THEFT IS RAMPANT IN HAWAII. I'm so sorry to report this.... but it's true. We have a very bad drug problem out here...I felt it's only fair to warn you of...

Mosquito Repellent or Blood Lettings!

by clws

We always pack a suitcase inside a suitcase so we can have extra space to bring home souveniers, coffee, and mac nuts! Casual and comfy clothes a must! Swim suits if you plan on swimming or sunbathing. Reef shoes if you plan on snorkeling or hiking in wet areas. A jacket or sweatshirt comes in handy for cool evening walks! A nice hat to keep the sun off your head and help keep it out of your eyes. And last but not least, sunglasses. Suncreen is a must. The sun can be rough on you. Mosquito repellent is also a must if you want to avoid a blood letting! Definately bring a camera, there is so much you will want to capture! Plenty of film if your camera requires it and extra batteries! If you have a digital camera, make sure you have a nice sized memory card or stick because you will take so many pictures here!
