Lihue Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • The only way to land on Kauai for most people is at Lihue Airport, which is located about 2 miles east of the town of Lihue.

Its airport designate is LIH, so when you are booking your flight, search for rates to get you to Lihue. Most likely, you will be connected via Hawaiian or Aloha Airlines, but there are also some direct flights on American and others.

  • By Air: United & American both have non-stop flights directly to Lihue, Kauai. Flights with Hawaiian, Alaska, ATA & Aloha require a connection in Honolulu.

By Car: A car is necessary to get around this island. Poipu Beach is 16 miles from the airport and generally under a 30 minute drive. Roads are one lane each direction so at times can back up especially if there is road construction.

One of my favorite acitivities is going to the Koloa Farmers Market on Monday's at noon. It's by the Ball Park and it gets very crowded so I'd strongly advise getting there before it opens. Parking fills up and items sell out quickly.

They sell a wide range of tropical fruits and vegetables. Many are rarely or never seen in the continental U.S. They also sell nuts, fresh coconuts (opened) and beautiful tropical flowers.

This vendor is slicing the tops off coconuts. He'll then insert a straw for customers to drink the coconut milk. Once they are finished he'll crack open the coconut for them to scoop out the soft coconut meat.

Although almost all magazines and newspapers have differing opinions on their "Top 10" lists, I think any beach that qualifies for one of these tips must be great. I did have the opportunity to check out Poipu Beach on my visit to Kauai, and was not disappointed. It received a top 10 nod from USA Today, which is not exactly a small publication. It was wonderful for me to get the opportunity to go to Poipu in the middle of December, when it was 40 degrees at home, and enjoyed a beautiful morning there.

  • This small park is dedicated to Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole born of royal parentage and decreed prince in 1871. He worked to benefit the Hawaiian people and was Hawaii's delegate to Congress 1902-22. Besides the statue, the foundation of the prince's home, a fishpond and heiau are located here.

Not really worth going out of your way for but if you're driving to Spouting Horn it's worth a photo stop. There is parking for a few cars off Lawa'i Road. The park faces the ocean.

The main focus of this garden is to preserve rare and endangered native Hawaiian plants. They have an extensive research, education and propogation facility. The gardens also include a natural setting in a verdant valley situated below rugged cliffs by the ocean.

  • This Moreton Bay Fig Tree was planted in the 1940's and used as a prehistoric setting in the film "Jurassic Park." Unfortunately you really can't see the enormous size of these roots. I should have taken a photo of a person standing between them.

Besides the outdoor garden rooms, pools, fountains and sculpture, there are species of Hawaiian plants that exist nowhere else in the wild.

  • As waves break on the rocks water is forced into a lava tube which spurts up like a geyser and produces an eerie sound. The larger the waves the higher the seawater spurts (up to 50 ft.). Better viewing is during high tide. Obviously my visit was not during the peak time. There is a protected fenced in viewing area.

Public parking, picnic tables and restrooms are available. Vendors have stalls set up by the parking area selling jewelry and souvenirs. This is a stop for tour buses. No admission charged to view Spouting Horn.

  • Directions: From Poipu Road headed towards the beach make a right on Lawa'i Road. The split in the road is at the "Welcome to Poipu Beach" sign in lava rock. Spouting Horn is a couple miles down the road on the left.
