If you would like to try Hawaiian food without all the tourist melodrama you will find in most commercial luaus, this is the place. Aloha Diner is a very small, basic, unpretentious, just what it says - diner (plastic tablecloths, view of the parking lot) - with authentic Hawaiian food that is not very expensive. Yummy.
My favorite is lau lau - pork and fish wrapped in a thick bundle of taro leaves and another layer of ti leaves, then steamed. You eat the taro - it is similar to spinach, but a softer, creamier texture and a richer flavor. The ti leaves are just wrapping - don't eat them. It's really delicious, and I wish I could get it here in Steamboat. Also delicious - the kalua pig, pipikaula (Hawaiian style jerky - very different), and the poke.
