I like the Hawaiian mix plate (shredded pork, ahi, lomi lomi, cabbage, rice). After a 6 hour hike with only GU and Gatorade this plate came as a reward. If you're on the south shore of Kaua'i, a great place to stop for lunch or dinner is the Waimea Bewing Company between Waimea and Kekaha -- the world's westernmost brewpub according to their sign (I haven't had the chance to verify this but I'm anxious to wander around the South Pacific looking -- anyone want to donate to the cause?). Not only is the freshly-brewed beer top notch, but the food is really well-prepared, well-presented and tasty. For lunch, try the Hawaiian burger. For dinner, the fish excels -- especially the ahi. I have eaten there four times in my last two visits for two reasons: it was excellent and they allowed me to have my dog, carmen, join me on the outside deck. Unfortunately, during my last visit a short stout Nazi waitress ordered Carmen off the deck because of some alleged Health Department regulations. So, as Carmen laid on the sidewalk less than three feet from me, I ate lunch while two cats and several chickens meandered about the deck. This made absolutely NO SENSE to me that my certified clean, rabies free therapy dog had to stay off the deck while I caught avian flu during my meal or some other disease passed on by the sneezes of customers allergic to cats. Am I missing something here?! Still, despite Carmen's rude reception, I highly recommend the place. Carmen was placated when I let her sprint after chickens on the lawns in the back. Okay, you just left the airport and you're starving. Take a detour before you head to your hotel to Hamura's Saimin. Saimin is basically the same as Ramen noodle, as in the soup. But so much better. When you get there and see that it's basically a hole in the wall and very crowded you might decide to pass (we almost did). But we waited for a counter space and ordered the "special" saimin and we were so glad we did. This was good stuff and cheap. We were so full that we didn't have any room for the liliko'i pie (which my co-worker recommended) or the shave ice (which the guidebook recommends). When I come back to Kauai I am getting that liliko'i pie!

This is a wonderful place to stop and get breakfast! Very affordable with awesome coffe and outstanding macadamia nut and pineapple or macadamia nut and banana pancakes! Yummy! They are large, light, fluffy, and filling! It has the look and feel of an old time diner. They are even nice enough to give us a final cup of coffee to go when we are ready to leave. Doesn't get much better than that!
When you can coax them into making you the pancakes with pineapple, banana, and macadamia nuts! Oh my! Out of this world! And the coffee, must not forget their great coffee! We would have loved to have brought this place home with us! The garlic crust is a must. They are closed on Mondays. Perfcet lunch or dinner spot if you are staying on the south end or on your way to the canyon.
We ate their version of the Deluxe pizza. Very fresh ingredients. They make their own sauce. The dough is almost a sweeter dough and to put the garlic on that had us scarfing it down. Ask the locals for Hawaiian food and they'll mention Aloha Diner. This is one of the places that don't just serve takaway, verry basic interior, but the food is uniquely Hawaiian and good. Not to be missed.

Had a burger, pepsi, frings (fries and onion rings). Not that great. The burger was better than McDonalds but not better than Carl's Jr. I think our very own In and Out Burgers in SoCal are much better!
Did not have one. But I did buy a tank top because it said Kauai on it. This restaurant was recommended to us by the concierge at the resort where we were staying, so we tried it for our first dinner in Kauai. The restaurant was nice and the food was good, but frankly I thought it a just a bit over-rated and over-priced. Our table looked out over a small Japanese-style garden, but we felt it fell short of it's potential considering the awesome beauty of the surrounding area. The service was good and we enjoyed talking with the friendly couple at the table next to ours. In addition to the restaurant and fish market, the Dolphin Center contains a couple of art galleries and about three other shops offering jewelry and clothing.
Since this is the "Dolphin Center," I ordered the grilled Dolphin. No, I didn't eat Flipper. This was the Dolphin fish, not the sea mammal. They also call the dolphin fish mahi mahi, which sounds a bit more tasty. It was dry but OK, although I felt the serving was a bit small for the high price they charged. The restaurant is small, clean and decent. I actually did not eat here but my boyfriend did. He said the burger is good. Friendly people at the counter. There is absolutely NOTHING like a shaved ice from Jo-Jo's on a hot and humid day. Make sure to get it with macadamia nut ice cream in the bottom. Yummy! Take it with you to go to Waimea Canyon.
