Tidepools: Experience Hawaiian Style Seafood Dishes

by AliasGirl Updated Aug 22, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Food is fantastic and its located right on the Hyatt Regency Property. Relax and enjoy a wonderful meal with excellent service and wait staff.

Every table is located in a hut overlooking a lagoon. Very romantic! Its like the tropics are indoors. Relax with a fruity drink and enjoy the Hawaiian Cuisine.

Favorite Dish: Great island fish prepared with fresh vegetables.

Bubba's Burgers: Kauai's Best Burger Joint

    by Stephen-KarenConn Updated Nov 23, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The man who took our order here told me that Bubba's Burgers is the smallest burger chain in America. With only two restaurants on Kauai and one on the Big Island, I don't see how they could be any smaller and still be a chain. This is a laid-back funky place which serves decent burgers at a good price. Their tongue-in-cheek motto is "We cheat tourists, drunks and attorneys," so if you're ever going to "be a traveler, not a tourist" this is the place to do it. From our table at Bubba's in Kapaa we could see across the highway to the Kapaa Beach Park, and a group of local young people playing vollyball. As the sun went down behind us a full moon came up over the Pacific. Good times, good feelings, good food.

If you like fruit, you have to stop at a Fresh Fruit Stand! I'm not a big fruit fan or anything... but I am telling you the truth here: fruit from a roadside stand is FABULOUS!

    Brennecke's in Poipu: Great Seafood!

by jeadon Updated Feb 19, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

They've been there forever and have a delightful selection of seafood items along with a steak special for the day. Brennecke's is right across from Poipu Beach Park and the ocean.

Favorite Dish: All of them, but the seafood "stew" and any fresh seafood is outstanding.

On your way up to Ke'e beach - there is a quick & cheap place to grab breakfast. The restaurant is called Lighthouse Bistro, it's in the Kong Lung Center, which is very close to the Kilauea Lighthouse & Bird Sanctuary.

Favorite Dish: Breakfast wraps - they are fabulous. You can get it with meat or vegetarian, they are only a couple of dollars.

    Gaylord's Restaurant: A Glimpse of Kauai's Past

    by Stephen-KarenConn Updated Nov 23, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Gaylord's Restaurant is set in the original covered courtyard of a grand plantation estate named Kilohana. It was built in 1935 by Gaylord Parke Wilcox was the most expensive and most beautiful home built on Kauai in the era when sugar was king. The prosperity brought by that enterprise is reflected in the mansions built by the sugar plantation growers, and that is especially evident here. Both the service and the cuisine at Gaylords reflect the grace and charm experienced by the wealthy plantation owners in that bygone era. We found it a special place for a memorable lunch.

Favorite Dish: Whoever wrote the menu at Gaylords should win a prize for "Best Menu Description." Here's what I ordered:

FRESH MAHI MAHI: Caught by Captain Greg Holzman while trolling off Kauai's west side: Fresh dorado pan seared with a macadamia nut crust served on Molokai purple potatoes, finished with a carmalized pineapple curry butter sauce, accompanied by stir-fried vegetables.

It tasted about as good as it sounds. Karen had a seafood salad which was equally as good.

    Pizzetta: Slice of Pizza

by SUSAMY Written Oct 28, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Great slice of pizza! Hot and fresh, fast and cheap. Nothing fancy, just perfect for lunch. When it's a beautiful day on Kauai, you want to spend your time on the beach, not at a restaurant eating lunch!

Favorite Dish: Amy liked their pepperoni, Susan liked the Hawaiian. They also have vegitarian, cheese, sausage.

Tip Top Cafe: "Delicious and Very Affordable"

by clws Written Apr 27, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a wonderful place to stop and get breakfast! Very affordable with awesome coffe and outstanding macadamia nut and pineapple or macadamia nut and banana pancakes! Yummy! They are large, light, fluffy, and filling! It has the look and feel of an old time diner. They are even nice enough to give us a final cup of coffee to go when we are ready to leave. Doesn't get much better than that!

Favorite Dish: When you can coax them into making you the pancakes with pineapple, banana, and macadamia nuts! Oh my! Out of this world!
And the coffee, must not forget their great coffee!

Polynesia Cafe - Hanalei Bay: Gourmet Food-Paper Plate Price!!

Great after hike/swim food. Multi-cultural menu (Pacific Rim, American, Mexican).

Favorite Dish: I like the Hawaiian mix plate (shredded pork, ahi, lomi lomi, cabbage, rice). After a 6 hour hike with only GU and Gatorade this plate came as a reward.

Casa di Amici: Delicious Italian food in beautiful Kilauea

    by cyndyj1 Updated Mar 24, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The food is excellent - not just spaghetti and lasagna. It is in a beautiful plantation style building with open windows, wooden shutters, ceiling fans, and sometimes live piano music. It's a place for local residents and tourists. (Jon Bon Jovi sat at a table next to me once.) Friendly management and an accomplished chef round out what Casa Di Amici has to offer

Favorite Dish: Just one? I'll give you a complete meal:

The Appetizer - "The Kiss of Friendship" - Boursin cheese with slivers of garlic, baked in phyllo with marinara sauce.

Salad: Fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil.

Main course: Fettucini marino (I think?) - fettucini with fresh fish and shellfish in a very spicy tomato sauce.

Good burgers - kind of a place you just have to stop at if your on Kauai.

Favorite Dish: Cheese burger & Frings. Yum! It seems that everywhere you go on this island, there's a restaraunt for burgers. Might as well go to one that has got personality!

    Oki Diner: Good local food

by malianrob Updated Dec 19, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A local recommended this place. He said the food was good and the prices we cheap. They also openned early. based on the reviews in one book I read, I probably wouldnt have come here. They said the food wasnt so good. I have to disagree. This place was filled with locals and the food, at least what I got, was very good.
I had the kalbi beef and rice. Excellent. Rob had the Loco moco like always. It was soso. Koa had the pocho with rice and eggs. Very good.
Service was good and fast. The prices were good compared to everywhere else on the island.

JoJo's Shave Ice: Best Shave Ice!

by girladventure Written May 31, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There is absolutely NOTHING like a shaved ice from Jo-Jo's on a hot and humid day. Make sure to get it with macadamia nut ice cream in the bottom. Yummy! Take it with you to go to Waimea Canyon. Enjoy the scenery with your Shave Ice.

Gaylord's at Kilohana: Would not be my first pick but....

by GracesTrips Written Aug 1, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

From the appearance, I thought "What a nice place". Well, let me tell you. You MUST make reservations. If you walk in, even if you see empty tables, they will make you wait. The reason behind this is because they have several retail stores selling over priced souvenirs and jewelry they want you to buy. Once seated for dinner, I ordered a seared ahi tuna entree which they told me would be cooked medium rare - it was well done. The ambience was great but I did not leave there satisfied.

Favorite Dish: Did not have a favorite dish.
