Casa di Amici: Delicious Italian food in beautiful Kilauea

by cyndyj1

The food is excellent - not just spaghetti and lasagna. It is in a beautiful plantation style building with open windows, wooden shutters, ceiling fans, and sometimes live piano music. It's a place for local residents and tourists. (Jon Bon Jovi sat at a table next to me once.) Friendly management and an accomplished chef round out what Casa Di Amici has to offer Just one? I'll give you a complete meal:The Appetizer - "The Kiss of Friendship" - Boursin cheese with slivers of garlic, baked in phyllo with marinara sauce.Salad: Fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil.Main course: Fettucini marino (I think?) - fettucini with fresh fish and shellfish in a very spicy tomato sauce.

Aloha Diner: Real Hawaiian Food

by cyndyj1

If you would like to try Hawaiian food without all the tourist melodrama you will find in most commercial luaus, this is the place. Aloha Diner is a very small, basic, unpretentious, just what it says - diner (plastic tablecloths, view of the parking lot) - with authentic Hawaiian food that is not very expensive. Yummy. My favorite is lau lau - pork and fish wrapped in a thick bundle of taro leaves and another layer of ti leaves, then steamed. You eat the taro - it is similar to spinach, but a softer, creamier texture and a richer flavor. The ti leaves are just wrapping - don't eat them. It's really delicious, and I wish I could get it here in Steamboat. Also delicious - the kalua pig, pipikaula (Hawaiian style jerky - very different), and the poke.

Brick Oven: Traveling to Kauai for pizza

by Gardenguest

We would have loved to have brought this place home with us! The garlic crust is a must. They are closed on Mondays. Perfcet lunch or dinner spot if you are staying on the south end or on your way to the canyon. We ate their version of the Deluxe pizza. Very fresh ingredients. They make their own sauce. The dough is almost a sweeter dough and to put the garlic on that had us scarfing it down.

Coconut Water

by goshawk301

You can get fresh coconut water in Kaua'i - the only place I know of outside Brazil (though I'm sure it's available in many places). Definitely my favorite refreshment in hot weather. It's sold at beach parks and farmers' markets; US $2-3 for a coconut. Be sure to ask to have the nut cracked open after you drink the water, so that you can eat the sweet jelly inside.

At your favorite bakery: Malasadas!

by goshawk301

These Portuguese beignets are sure tasty! I bought a bagful of them at Waimea Town Celebration and had them for snacks and breakfasts. You can find them in bakeries; there are also roadside stalls selling fresh ones.

Brennecke's in Poipu: Great Seafood!

by jeadon

They've been there forever and have a delightful selection of seafood items along with a steak special for the day. Brennecke's is right across from Poipu Beach Park and the ocean. All of them, but the seafood "stew" and any fresh seafood is outstanding.

Pomodoro in Kalaheo: Wonderful Italain

by jeadon

We love Italian food and this place is a real find! In Kalaheo, up stairs in a small shopping center of all places! It's on the ocean side of Lihue Highway just east Steve's Food Mart. Call for reservations. Wonderful wine list and menu. Personal, friendly service. Very owner-involved. I love the Canelloni! The pasta's tender and the marinara's fantastic. The Kalamari's also great for an appetizer.

Fresh Fruit Stand kind of by Poipu Beach: Fresh Fruit Stands

by SUSAMY

If you like fruit, you have to stop at a Fresh Fruit Stand! I'm not a big fruit fan or anything... but I am telling you the truth here: fruit from a roadside stand is FABULOUS! Fresh Pineapple... oh yeah!

Pizzetta: Slice of Pizza

by SUSAMY

Great slice of pizza! Hot and fresh, fast and cheap. Nothing fancy, just perfect for lunch. When it's a beautiful day on Kauai, you want to spend your time on the beach, not at a restaurant eating lunch! Amy liked their pepperoni, Susan liked the Hawaiian. They also have vegitarian, cheese, sausage.

Shave Ice Paradise: Hawaiin Shave Ice

by SUSAMY

This Shave Ice place had the best ICE of all the Shave Ice places we went to in Kauai... because they actually do shave it, right in front of you. It was kind of like snow. Really neat. They didn't give us enough of the flavor-juice though, so the bottom of the cup was just plain ice. Shave Ice, of course
