One of the best ways to see the Napali Cliffs and the Waimea Canyon is by helicopter. This was the one thing my husband wanted to do. We were fortunate to find an excellent deal for an hour tour of these areas. The company we chose is named "Island Helicopters."

We had excellent weather which afforded excellent views and photo opportunities. The Waimea region is often shrouded in fog and clouds but this particular day the weather "gods" smiled upon us and we had one of the most beautiful rides ever. The canyon is often likened to the Grand Canyon in Arizona and has been nicknamed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific." It is in fact, far more beautiful with the greenery and waterfalls which are fed by the wettest spot on Earth known as Mt Waialeale. Mt Waialeale gets over 450 inches of rain a year and rarely does the mountain top see the light of day, on our visit we were very happy to be able to see it without a cloud.

We enjoyed seeing the famous "Tunnel of Trees from the air as well as the rain forrests and the areas where "Jurrassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark and Bali Hai" were filmed.

In accordance with F.A.A. regulations, the helicopter is subject to weight limitations; so you must provide your with height and weight.. Any passenger over 250 lbs will be required to purchase an additional seat. Also, any parties of two travelling together with combined weights over 440 lbs will be required to purchase an additional seat so don't pig out at a luau the night before!

All in all we both agreed to really see the Island of Kauai one must see it by helicopter.

    Hanalei Pier
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Hanalei Pier was made famous by the movie "South Pacific". The travel books make much of the fact that this is where Mitzi Gaynor sang "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair."

Hanalei Beach itself is a great swimming beach in the summer. We heard the surf gets pretty wild in the winter. What a contrast in summer! The Bay is calm in the summer and suitable even for children.

    Opaeka'a Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • These valls are really beautiful. If you get to view them after a rainy time period, but after the red mud run off, they are absolutely gorgeous! Around 10:00am to 10:30 am is the best time. Well worth the visit! For those that love to hike and can stand a strengent hike, you can hike to the bottom of them.

    The Na Pal'i Coast - 2001
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you come to Kaua'i, you MUST see the Na Pal'i coast. It is only accessible by sea or helicopter. This was the end of the line where I could drive. These following shots are the Northwest coast of this topographical marvel. The Na Pal'i coast is most recently renowned for its filming location for Jurassic Park.

This Hawaiian adventure begins with choosing a tour company. You'll find many choices, we chose Waialeale Boat Tours, Inc. It was one of the smaller, older boats cruising to the Grotto and also less crowded. We wanted to have plenty of space and enjoy our trip not spend time jockeying for a position on the boat.

This little adventure takes you up the Wailua River where you'll meet a lava rock grotto covered with tropical ferns. Along the way, you will be serenaded, with Hawaiin music and authentic Hula. We received historical facts and legends along the way as well.

The trip along the Wailua River takes 40 minutes to the grotto. Once you arrive, you are led through tropical gasslands, you will also notice beautiful and friendly birds and peacocks. (See my travelogues) Lots of photo ops along the way to the Grotto, however, stay with your tour group, you wouldn't want to get lost here!

At the Grotto, you will again be serenaded by Hawaiian musicians playing traditional local songs. The singing is fantastic and it really gives you goose bumps as you are sitting in the amphitheatre, overlooking the Fern Grotto. It is truly a nice adventure.

I would recommend Waialeale Boat Tours, Inc. (red boat) Tours are exactly 1 1/2 hours long. They leave every half hour, starting at 9:00am to 3:30pm.

    Rates:
    $15.00 adults
    $7.50 children
    $14.00 seniors

Tip: Leave enough time for this activity - allow for alittle more time that 1 1/2 because once they load up the boats and then leave and then get to the grotto, each tour boat waits its turn at the dock before unloading, as a courtesy. It doesn't add too much time maybe 15 minutes or so. Then your little show, some pictures and back on the boat for another 40 minutes of Hawaiian melodies and beautiful scenery!!

This is a great beach for snorkeling! You will even occasionally see a sea turtles here, but please don't upset them. The path to this gem is a little hard to negotiate at times, especailly if it has been raining and it is muddy. Don't go here during really high surf.

    Secret Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Secret Beach is so deserted! If you are looking for a beach that isn't crowded, then this is it. On the flip side of that, there are some people that get a little too comfortable with all that privacy.....we stumbled upon some naked sunbathers.
