Wailua Falls, Kauai
Waimea falls is an easy trip from Lihue. Armed with a rental vehicle one can reach it within 10 min and spend another half an hour or so ogling at it. The inconvenience is that the lookout point is only one and at the top of the falls so it becomes difficult to grasp the might of the water flow and bathing is rendered impossible. Even if there are trails leading to the base they are deemed dangerous, hence not officially sanctioned. Nevertheless, the scenery consists of classic tropical lushness with mad greenery cascading down a huge bowl. The natural beauty has attracted other kind of worshipper – the tourist salesman. In a tightly controlled tourism industry with emphasis on law and order for the sake of sustainability the small guys have been pushed around and this location is no exception. Nasty prohibiting signs warn against peddling – yeah, if it were a whole sale operation with busloads unleashing a stampede it would have been worthy of a shopping mall right there. Despite the uncertainties ushering a careful behavior, locals still manage to quietly promote and demonstrate their skills spurred by environment and tradition. One can admire and acquire baskets lavishly gilded with creatures and devices made solely of palm leaves. Some of them are so convincing that they exchange hands in moments!
There are many waterfalls on Kauai since it receives a great deal of moisture. Wailua Falls is perhaps the most well known one since the viewpoint is so accessible and it was featured on the opening to "Fantasy Island". On the east side of Kauai, the waterfall is a few miles up from the main road. There is a viewpoint and a parking area. It is possible to hike down to the bottom and go to the natural pool, however there is an element of danger involved. It might be best to view the falls early in the day before the tour vans pull up. This is a popular place, but worth the trip.
You can visit Wailua Falls just a short drive from Lihue and the Fern Grotto. There is a natural pool people were swimming in way down at the bottom, but you have to climb through the holes in the fences and hike down...looks like fun :) Around the falls, it is so green and lush...beautiful! The whole island is like this, I guess that's why it's called the Garden Island
If the falls in this photo looks familiar it may be because it was used in the opening shot for the Television series Fantasy Island. Of the many spectacular waterfalls on the island of Kauai, this is one of the easiest to access. You can just drive up and take a look. The falls makes a dizzying leap from a rock ledge into a deep pool. I have read in one source that the falls is 80-feet, and in another that it is 173-feet. To me it seemed to be closer to the higher figure. Parking at the overlook is limited to just a wide place at the terminus of a dead-end road. A sign warns against hiking down to the base of the falls, but we could look down and see a couple who had ignored the warning, playing at the water's edge. Our daughter and her husband went down to the base of the falls when they were here on their honeymoon. They said the trail was muddy, steep and difficult.
In ancient times Hawaiian warriors would jump off the top of the falls to prove their manhood. Some didn't survive the test. A few testosterone-driven young men have also made the jump in more recent times. Those who lived to tell the tale only proved that they were idiots.
In ancient times men used to jump off the falls to prove their manhood. Unfortunately, many died the 180 foot drop.
The two falls plunge into a pool that is 33 feet deep. There is a slippery trail down to the bottom for those that want to swim in the pool, but most observe from the roadside. Best to view early in the morning.
The falls were used in the opening scenes of the show "Fantasy Island".
Smiles Everyone! Remember this from 'Fantasy Island'..well these falls are pictured in the opening scene.
It is a fantastic sight, should not be missed! It has been photographed in so many ways but it does not do it justice. The 80 foot tall falls are certainly a sight to see!
The abundance of rain on Kauai means an abundance of waterfalls. One of the most popular falls to visit are the Wailua Falls near Lihue. These falls are seen with the opening credits of "Fantasy Island".
"Da plane! Da plane!"
Beautiful waterfalls accesible from Highway 583 or Ma'alo Road which branches off Highway 56 around Lihu'e. In ancient times brave men would leap from the top of the falls to prove their bravery. There's an easier way to the bottom of the falls by taking the trail which starts 3/10 of a mile down the road. Not that easy still because the trail is steep and can be very slippery (as it was when we visited). The brave can nowadays splash about into the cold pool of water at the bottom of the falls.
These are the same falls that were on the television series "Fantasy Island" They are absolutely stunning, and it is not unusual to see a rainbow around the falls while you are there!
Beautiful waterfall in verdant tropical surroundings.
Unfortunately it's not allowed to take a swim in the pool below the falls.
