Rent a car to get around

by malianrob Written Dec 16, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The best way to get around the island is to rent a car. I dont think I even saw a bus or a taxi ever so rent a car so you have the freedom to do what you want.
Renting a car though is not cheap. It is pretty expensive just like everything else on this island.
We rented a jeep for four days and it was $362. This also included a car seat. Gas is pricey also but it was around the same price we pay in Los Angeles.

Airport to Kalalau trail is about 40 miles.

Bus system on Kauai is NOT friendly or accomodation to backpackers.Anything larger than a grocery bag, they won't let you on bus to Hanalei.
    Cabs cost between $60-80.
Legal to hitch hike on Kauai.Caution.
    1.Car rental is last resort.
I would not advise anyone to park their car at the end of the road where the trail begins.Instead, park car at Haena State park and walk back 1/4 mile to trail.Haena State Part has a lighted area, people are camping at the park, and there is less chance of your car being stolen or broken into.Leaving vehicles overnight at the begining of the trail is not recommended.

2.Another option would be to rent car, transport people and equiptment to Haena State Park, while your friends or partner is setting up camp, return the rental car to airport, catch bus to Hanalei, hitch hike to Haena State Park; camp over one night and start on the Kalalau trail early the next morning. Save on car rental fees while hiking and camping.

3.Third option is to negotiate a round trip price with a cab driver.Agree to meet and pick up at a certain time and date.50% now, 50% latter.

If you are questioning Renting A Car--I say...

by AliasGirl Updated Aug 10, 2004

If you are trying to decide on renting a car and can swing it within your budget..I say yes, do it!

We rented a convertible Mustang and drove all around the island, to different restaurants and many, many water falls. It gives you the convienance to travel as you please and check out the island from end to end. You can also stop and see the many water falls and discover your own 'off the beaten path' locales.

Tip #1: Bring a picnic lunch and stop under a shady tree to enjoy a few stolen moments.

Tip #2: Take this opportunity to stop at a supermarket and pick up sundrys, snacks, water etc. It will be much cheaper than your hotel sundry shop.

    Fly here

by malianrob Written Dec 16, 2007

We took an inter-island flight to Kauai from Oahu. It took us about 20 minutes to get here so it was a quick flight. There is supposed to be a super ferry thats going to be available (if it isnt already) that will take you to the different islands also.

    Rent A Car

    by Etoile2B Written Jan 22, 2009

Unless you’re visiting the island on a cruise or an organized tour you are going to need to rent a car to get around. Kauai easy to navigate and small enough that with a car you will be able to easily see the entire island. I would recommend making a reservation for a car prior to arriving. If you make a reservation directly through one of the major rental car companies you can cancel, even the day of, without incurring a penalty. The rental car agencies are all directly across the street from baggage claim in the Lihue airport, making it easy if you want to try and “shop around” to get a better rate or finagle a free or discounted upgrade to a Jeep or convertible.

    Lihue Airport

    by Etoile2B Updated Jan 24, 2009

Lihue Airport is a small, semi-open air airport and the major point of entry for the island of Kauai. There are a small number of flights directly between Lihue and the mainland but a majority of visitors will have to change planes in Honolulu to get to Kauai. If you are flying to or from another Hawaiian Island you will need to change planes in Honolulu to get to or from Kauai. Though this airport is small you will find many of the conveniences of any other airport. There are also advantages to flying in and out of this small airport: baggage can be collected at baggage claim more quickly than at a larger airport and the people working here are so nice making it easier to get individualized help. Another plus, all the rental car agency desks are found directly across the street from baggage claim, in case you want to search out better deals face to face and counter to counter and the cars are easily found right behind those same counter so no shuttles. It’s easy in, easy out, close to town and Lihue is pretty central so it makes it easy to get away to the north or south side of the island in no time at all.

    Flights to Kauai

by mwkwan Written Aug 2, 2004

The major airlines will fly you to Honolulu. Aloha or Hawaiian have frequent flights to Lihue. It is not quite 30 minutes flight from HNL. Once there it is best to rent a car. All the major rental companies are at the airport. You can rent a car for about $30-40 a day. Look for internet deals.

    Biplane around the island!

by SUSAMY Updated Nov 15, 2003

The biplane tour takes you around the whole island for an hour. Super cool tour to take! The plane is a reproduction of an honest biplane, complete with dope-wings. You get to see it all from a biplane!

    Watch for the bridges!

by GracesTrips Written Sep 27, 2007

On the north shore, there are several bridges. They are only wide enough for a single vehicle. Therefore, they cannot accomodate 2-way traffic. Be courteous!
