A.K.A. The Grand Canyon of the Pacific. This is a "must do" activity when visiting Kauai. Drive to the town of Waimea and turn up Waimea Canyon Drive (one block past Island Taco on the right). Stop at all of the turnouts and lookouts on the way up. The canyon and waterfall views are spectacular.

There are picnic areas, small turn-outs, and official lookouts with parking lots along the way. Restrooms are generally located in the larger lookouts. You won't find any commercial establishments in the area of the canyon after leaving the town of Wailua. There is a lodge, restaurant, and museum at Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow further up the road on the way to Kalalau Lookout.

Be sure to continue on to the Kalalau Lookout at the end of the road for a views the Napali Coast and Kauai's neighboring island Niʻihau.

Mark Twain called this the "grand canyon of the pacific" . I have to say, this canyon is very grand . It is one of those natural wonders that blows your mind ! It was so peaceful and serene. It is located on the western shore of Kaua'. This canyon is about 10 miles long, and 1 mile wide. If you look down, you can see it is deep. But I bet you didnt know it is 3600 feet deep! Anywhere you stand, you will have an amazing view! The pathway to get to the look out points is a steep ramp. You can take a zig zagged ramp that isnt as steep, but takes a little but longer to walk up. You will deffinatly work your calf musscels!

Beware the bathrooms! They smell B-A-D ! I dont know if there is any plubing out there, I mean there has to be, but from the smell of it, we stayed clear. It smelled like a hole in the ground!

The lookout offers a spectacular view of the Napali Coast as seen from the top of a canyon looking down towards the ocean. It can take a while to get there since it is at the end of the road as you drive counter-clockwise around the island, but its worth the trip. The view is featured on many postcards of the Napali Coast.

Going to the Kalalau Lookout is only way to see the Napali Coast when touring in a car. From there you'll only see one canyon view, so if you want to see more you should consider other options such as taking a helicopter or boat tour, or hiking the coastline.

The Kalalau Lookout is at the end of Kokee Rd (route 550). This is the same road used to see Waimea Canyon, so if you are already in the area be sure to continue to this lookout.

Hawaii is incredible if you like to trek...but this was a great place to go. At the end of the day...we got a nice, cold ice cone from the local shop in town on our way back to waimea cottages...a perfect day.

A visit to the sleepy little village of Waimea is a nice pit stop on the way up to or down from the majestic canyon. Stretch your legs and take a walk through town. Near the water is a small park and a pier. I don’t recommend the beach for sunbathing or swimming as the sand and water were very dirty when we visited but it was romantic to walk down to the end of the pier and take in the view of the ocean and the coastline. If you’re looking for a good beach, look elsewhere.

I came up here twice and I wasnt able to see anything because of the fog. But usually you would be able to see waterfalls and the valley below. This place is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific and from what I hear its impressive.

We came here to to see what was here. Basically, its not much to see just a bunch of ruins. Rocks really and a bunch of chickens.
We had the jeep so that was cool because there was alot of area around here, not at the fort but nearby, where we went 4X driving.
There is alot of history here which I am sure most of you coming to Kauai have probably read about already so I am not going to bore you with details other than some Russian guy came to the island to claim it for Russia. Didnt succeed and got kicked off the island.
This place really wasnt on my top "to do" list while here on Kauai but as we were driving around we say the place off the main highway and we decided to check it out.
